Been looking around for my next bike, after a 4-600cc sports bike.

Saw a 2000 yamaha R6 the other day, WOW! They look absolutely gorgeous, and they sound the dogs danglies!

How good'er bike are they? Iv heard mixed reviews, some people say they are the best bikes they have ever owned, and others say that they couldnt get on with them.

Anyone done long distance on one?

What are the maintenence schedules like on them?

Seems i can get around a 2000/2001 model with around 18k miles on for £2.5, is this a big mileage for one of these bikes?

Regards, Jonny

1. the bike itself is stupidly track focused, very revy motor even for a 600, haveing said that when they get going, they do go! elderly gentleman tend to moan about it haveing no midrange, there wrists and ass ache, blah blah. But then you dont buy a lamboghini because its cheap, comfortable and very good around town. same principle aplies. Basically its a holligan bike, a very good hooligan bike. I still ride mine daily and dont find it anymore of a pain than any other bike but im young and like going everywhere at 100mph so it suits my rideing style.

2. very reliable, use mine daily no problems, it doesnt rot in winter, motor is fine, despite being abused the second its warmed up. Parts are easy to find on ebay, same as any other jap bike, cost wise, if you crash it or need genuine yamha parts. 1000's of tart bits you can buy for them.

Basically they are like any other jap 6 when it comes to comfort, reliability, servicing, etc. 18k isnt big mileage, 30k is.

One rule with these bikes, dont buy it from a hooligan, the gearboxes dont take second gear wheelies, so if hes a wheelie nut then buy elsewhere otherwise your looking at a new engine. Trouble is most r6 owners are hooligans and you can bet its spent most of its life on one wheel.

Yeah, i know the ninja 636's also have gearboxes made from cheese.

Iv been riding supermoto for a while now, ranging from my 40bhp KTM screamer, to my buddys crf450 and yamaha YZ426F.
So pretty used to competetive, revvy, bikes by now! but im sure an R6 is going to be a fairly large change to get used to, but im not really wanting to join the 400 croud, not saying there is anything wrong with a 400, but most people i know who have had a 400 (vfr/rvf/zxr etc) have wanted to upgrade to a faster, bigger bike within weeks. So seems abit pointless for me to follow the 400 flock!

Whats the power delivery like? Some people say snappy and jerky, some say smooth?!

Quite dead up until about 8k then it hits a 'powerband' until about 11/12 then it just goes fucking mental up to the redline.

i have a 2000 R6 and every second on it is a scream

i've found after a long ride it does make the wrist's ache a little but the seat is good enough for me, spent 6 hours on it a few weeks ago and had no problems Mr. Green

exellent bike, really nice sounding motor, well built - check the carb sync when ya get it! well give you a smoother ride if it hasn't been sync'd in ages

definitley not jerky, one of the smoothest bikes ive ever ridden, much smoother than ANY fuel injected bike. As said,
no power, very smooth 0 - 8k, then the exhaust note changes, you feel power and torque for the first time, up to about 12k, throttles a bit snappy, above 12k exhaust is screaming, stupid amounts of power, very snatchy, can highside very easily, will spinup if wet, going from first to second pinning it usually results in it hoiking up on one wheel. red lines at 16k, limiter is about 17.5k.
it feels faster than it is because of the mental power delievery, dont let the revs drop below 8k, even in traffic, because youll be over taken by mopeds.

sounds like my type of bike! whilst youth is on my side!

Fortunately iv got 2 good yamaha dealers not far from me, for parts and any major jobs i cant do.

Raceways in fleetwood (blackpool) - really top guys, went in once and ended up getting shown around the whole premesis and workshop, really really nice spot. parts a plenty + dyno!

Rocket centre in blackburn - despite the location (!) very good parts service there i found.

What exhausts are you guys running, other than stock? the gp style MIVV exhausts look nice, and so do the akro's!

not if you clean it on the weekend, just getting a pressure washer out and spraying the muck off will stop it (litreally a 5 min job)

exhasts arent legal and you can get a 30 quid fine and a re-mot if the coppers a prick.
MOT testers usually dont give a toss how loud the exhaust is.

In their day they were THE 600 to have. Thumbs Up

The 5EBs are a little dated now (been around 11 years and things have moved on) but still look good enough (the blue still does it for me) and will do anything/everything you'd want it to (and then SOME!!).

2nd gear is supposed to be a weakspot, but I've had er .. 4 of them now and never had a problem!! Confused So I have either been really lucky or people have been blowing them out by abuse - low oil, bad shifting whilst doing wheelies? perhaps? Dunno, but be aware of it when looking at one.

Just sorting some insurance qoutes, and a little confused.

there are 2-3 different models of R6 on the insurance websites:

R6 EXTREME SPORT
R6 98-01
R6 HARRIS

For some reason, the prices seem to be wildly different!

to insure myself on the "R6 EXTREME SPORT" its anywhere from £500-630 a year

but on the "98-01" model listing its like £1400-2000!!?!?

What the hell gives? dont want to buy the bike thinking i can get insurance for £500, then find out the insurance company left a 0 off the end of the insurance qoute!

Think the 'Extreme Sport' and Harris were both Imports Question

the standard 98-01 were the stock UK model

hi for insurance they come under Yamaha YZF R6 extreme performance. The harris was a special edition.

i have a '00 14K miles in blue and love it.

awesome machine and plenty fast enough for uk roads.

some people say oh its not a R1 gsxr thou etc etc but anybody who can acctually ride them will keep up with all but the most hardend of nutters on smooth twisty roads.

I love my 2000 R6, it's my second 600 sports. I had a Gsxr 600 Srad before and the 6 is a much more nicer bike to ride and more fun.

I am running an akrapovic can and it sounds amazing.

Get one you will love it, as others have said though it's a little dead lower down the rev range.

Right, iv gone over and over and over the insurance qoutes, and seems the cheapest i can get is £632 TPO from bennets, dont know how exactly it is so cheap, but the model i selected is the "extreme sport".
Did a qoute on confused.com and it brought up one qoute at £632 (bennets), one at like £700, and then the next cheapest one was like £3200?! and they all got more expensive from there on.

Do the R6's (2000 model/2001) come with alarms or any other security system fitted? i.e immobiliser etc

^^ edit* by the way, im 17, passed car test & driving also, a2 bike license, and have been riding several different bikes on the road since 16 and never claimed.
For no claims, does it need to be a full year on one insurance policy? because iv never kept a bike longer than a year! but have been insured on different bikes with different companies for over a year
