Rear tyre temp repair question

Had a rear puncture earlier today - RAC came out and did temp repair (plugged it) - hole was right in the centre of the tyre (in one of the tread grooves itself) - RAC bloke reckons I should get the tyre replaced asap and not go over 40mph in the meantime.

Only put the tyre on new 6 months ago (doh!) - concensus on the forum seems to be plugging tends to be ok and that its probably just over caution.

Anyone had any instances of a tyre plug/repair failing at high speed? Read some threads where riders have used the tyre until treadwear forced replacement - any comments welcome.

I've used plugged tyres till they have worn out before but most people recommended against it.

You may as well just keep using it but keep an eye on it.
It isn't going to suddenly explode or something; if it fails it will probably just go flat at an inconvenient moment.
Front tyre sudden deflation is more hazardous.

I am guessing that the RAC mans plug will be more of a temporary measure than a full blown puncture repair. Whenever I have had tyres plugged they have removed the tyre from the rim and bonded it on the inside too. I am guessing that the RAC man just opened the hole up and forced the plug in and back through?

It might be okay but do you really want to find out if it goes bang at speed? I think I would at least have it done properly at a bike tyre specialist and then you should be fine.

i have just shelled out on a new tyre after a puncture on the old one, i filled the old one with slime which lasted about a week until it started spraying out all over the back of the bike.

i rang every shop within a 10 mile radius and all of them said they would'nt plug a Z rated tyre which is why i forked out on a new one, personally, given the choice i would rather have had it plugged and used it till it either let go or wore out but meh, its on now and am currently getting fed up of scrubbing it in

a work colleague of mine got a puncture in his rear tyre roughly a year ago , so he got it plugged at the local garage and has done at least 3,000 miles on it no problems.

i think it might have more than one plug in it possibly as well.

Its not technically illegal to plug a z rated tyre, but it does fall foul of British Standard BS159F - which is only a guideline....
I fit tyres, and we wont plug a z rated or above tyre purely because of the implications if it failed - its just not worth the risk to us, however how small.

I have a plug in my tyre and it seems fine, just check the tyre pressures a bit more than normal

Just to get this straight in my head, are we talking plugs or repairs (or are they they same?)

I've just had a new tyre but the guy who fit it did offer a repair as he said Michelin actually approve of repaired tyres.

Thanks for the replies - I'm going to see how things go for the next week or two (keep checking pressure etc) - may see if I can get a better repair done on it.

I don't think tyre is Z rated (bike might just sneak it over 130 mph) so I'm hoping repair is possible without too much trouble. Anybody know if there is someone in the Cheshire, Merseyside, South Manchester or North Staffs who does ride in/out repairs?

Personally i'd get the repair re-done, just to be on the safe side.
If £'s aren't a big issue then i'd replace.

I know a guy who had a rieju 50cc and had the rear tyre plugged about 13 times and used it till it had worn out.

Meh I think the RAC guy is just covering himself tbh ,

repair plugs are supposed to be a temp repair anyway but many people have used their tyres as normal until the life of the tyre ends.

My CBR600F rear tyre ate 2 nails, I plugged one of them myself using silly string repair , the other was plugged by Matt (before I bought a tyre repair kit) who used a mushroom repair kit.

I went to Spain and back and went over 100 almost every day at one point going about double the UK speed limit, and the tyre repair held on ok.

A proper repair isn't as extensive as you think anyway , they get a 4mm drill bit and drill out the hole, stick some of this blue glue on it then push a mushroom thing with a long tail on it attached to a big metal rod to get through the tyre (as the tail grips the sides of the hole).

He pulls it all the way through with the mushroom covering the hole, pulls it , puts something heavy on it for a minute or two , then cuts off the tail with a stanley knife and sticks the tyre back on the rim.

Temp repairs are Temp. So dont use it on fast / long trips.
Although the worst that can happen is it will go down again. Its not going to blow out on you.


Get to Watling tyres or a bike tyre shop. And get the Temp plug removes, and a professional repair done.

I plugged the rear tyre on my TLR last week. I've had it at 170mph today and on the back wheel loads. Its holding out fine.

You need to get a proper repair done using a big mushroom shaped plug that is fitted from inside the tyre. I've had several done like that and continued to use the tyre as normal untill it wore out (including five trackdays).
Plugs fitted from the outside are only temporary as its really on the glue thats holding them in.

Had a spate of nails getting picked up in the rear tyre and when I'd just had a new dunlop 208 fitted on the back I had it plugged/fixed by a local bike garage.

Then took it up to Silverstone and ragged it round....

Never an issue or problem with it...

UPDATE:

Had a repair done on rear tyre about 2 weeks ago on (ie temp plug that had been put in by RAC patrol - puncture was a 5mm hole in centre of tread).

Repair was a mushroom plug put in from inside by Two Wheel Tyres M/C tyre supplier/fitter based in Byley, Cheshire - proper job (have been checking pressures over last couple of weeks and no loss of air).

Anyway, went out to bike last night to take for a quick spin after being away for a couple of days and rear is flat as a pancake!

Checked tyre properly this am (suspecting the mushroom repair had failed) and unbelievably have a 2nd puncture in as many weeks (staple sticking out of tread)!

Took back for repair - they injected puncture sealant into tyre which seems to have done the trick.
