A mate of mines got a Gixxer 6. SRAD. Bit of an old girl, Overall quite a good bike. But its high mileage and the engines a bit run down.
After a long run, It starts to cut out, And die, As if its flooding out.

Theres an un-nerving rattle coming from the engine. The clutch is shocking. First gear doesn't select 90% of the time. It needs to be really stamped into gear.

To cut a long story short, It would be cheaper / easier to either replace the bike. Or the engine as a whole.

I suggested sticking a 750 engine from a bike of similar year. Is this as easy as I think it is? A straight swap in terms of engine mounts etc?

And how much better is the 750 motor over the 600. I've had a go on this 600 of my mates and its a tired old girl. it wont even clutch wheelie its that underpowered.

Frames are identical so it'd be a straight swap, you just need the engine, carbs and CDI, swapping to a fuel injection 750 engine is more hassle as you'd need the injection specific tank, and clocks are different (FI light etc) though you could no doubt still used carbed versions.

Hmmm what about investigating the faults? The fuelling / cutting out won't be fixed with a new engine cos you don't normally get the ancilleries with the engine. The rattle? CCT? 1st gear, strip, clean, re-lube linkages? Might not cost much at all...

If you do go for the engine swap, I'd recommend staying with the 600 - at least the bike can be sold as standard then, rather than spending a lot of cash to devalue / limit the bikes resale.

id say pretty much the opposite. if youre going through all the hastle of a swap you might aswell get a power boost out of it too.

Are you sure the engine's on it's last legs? A light rattle from the piston end can still keep going for a good while.

A definite 'knocking' or machine gun kind of sound then likely big end and it's a pretty iminent failure.

Thing is... most jap engines are bullet proof and will last (Suzuki certainly no exception) but everything else (as your friend has probably realised) fails around it.

Are you sure the rattle IS from the engine?

Like others have said an engine swap won't be a fix all.
I'm inclined to think the doggy performance is down to the other components, clutch, worn chain, carbs likely out of whack, plugs old. All little things that WILL add up to a big performance hit.

A friend had a 93/94 gsxr 750 that was ragged to hell.
He refreshed all the consumables and had a sevice done on the carbs and dyno'd it. As stock with an aftermarket yoshi can on it was still kicking out around the same HP as it was supposed to from new.

Whats the mileage on it? those lumps are good for 80K+

Either it needs a good service, the fuel filters need cleaning or someone has pissed about with the carbs.

Fit a new cam chain and tensioner, you will have change form £100

The hole for the pivot bolt in the clutch lever is worn. £10 fix, fit a new lever.

Very much doubt it.

These are all common problems on the SRAD, cheap and easy to fix.

Is it definitely the clutch though, With the gear issue?
It selects all other gears fine. Even from Neutral, To 2nd. It will glide in.
It just wont go from 2nd to 1st without a fight.

How difficult of a job is a cam chain change?

Mileage is around 25k miles, And it was only serviced around 2k miles ago.

25K? It's nothing really. If oil changes have been when they should (or near enough) then it's just been run in Wink .

Gears do sound dodgy but I'll wait for backup on that as it's not my area.

Cam chains on Jap stuff very rarely wears out especially at as little as 25k. (Unless there's some SRAD issue I don't know about?) The tensioner's likely had it though and new one is easy enough to get and install.

The rubber dampers/idlers for the cam chain harden quick quickly and can break away or chip. May be worth checking them at least.

seconded. mines on just under 35k and going perfect.

i had a fuelling problem like the one described, but a new fuel pump sorted it.

rattle is likely a CCT problem. £40 for the part from APE for a manual one which is less likely to fail.

the gearbox problem sounds clutch related almost, as when i dont fully disengage the clutch mine doesnt like going into first, but then again, i do prefer the biting point close to the bars.

try keeping downward pressure on the lever and letting the clutch out slightly.

I personally think its got more than 25k on it. I cant be sure they are the original clocks.

I've not had a good look at it really. I just know it goes powerless when its had a good run. And it does have a definite engine rattle.
It only really rattles when you blip the throttle, and the revs are dropping back to idle.

Its certainly not something jingling about behind the fairings etc. Its 100% an internal engine noise.

Come to think of it, It could be the clutch rattling couldnt it? Which could possibly explain the dodgey gear?

sounds like the CCT is rattling as the cam chain changes tension. i personally dont think its the clutch,

Why not take the clutch lever off and see if the bolt hole is still round?

I'll have a look tomorrow. Leon is popping up to my work to collect a paddock stand.

Could an elongated bolt hole really make that much of a difference?

That much that it's almost impossible to change gear.

Pretty easy although it is a cams out job really and you need a cam chain link tool, like a normal chain tool but extra dinky. I sell the chains and the tools if you need them. You will also need a timing cover gasket as well.

Although cam chains should last a lot longer than 25k I've seen them killed by people who run their bikes very low on oil in as little as 10k. I generally change them on my own bikes at around 40k.

Last one I had fail was on an ER-5 at 48k.

Normal for the SRAD to battle getting into first.....Its nothing abnormal for this bike. I sometimes stop on mine in 4th, and battles to go all the way down to 1st.

Just an SRAD Issue, clutch, I had the same problem, and the rattle, i got it too, have no clue what it is, but only at high revs. The other chain rattle is your cam chain and tensioner, replace them.

Id stick to the 600 SRAD, im not imressed with the 750 SRAD, there really isnt much difference, and the 600 pulls off faster, I think its because its carbed.

Thats my 2 south african cents worth Wink trust me thats not much over your side!
