Hi all,

I have a CBR600 FX with a hole in the exhaust downpipes.

Its about the size of a 2 pence piece.

The surrounding metal is too weak to repair it so I am going to get it replaced next month (as money is a bit tight this month)

My question is...

is it ok to keep on riding it until then? Will they be any damage to the engine if I do this?

I've got a set of downpipes from an FY model in my garage if you wanna make an offer. Open to swaps if you've got anything interesting.

As said you need to cover it somehow, otherwise it will grow quickly.

My car was blowing, hole size of 1p, 10 days later half the backbox was gone.

Tin or some metal tape

Can you wrap a bit of tin around the hole with a couple of jubilee clips? keep you going until you can get some replacement pipes.

Afraid not... the hole is on the bottom where the 4 downpipes turn into one, it would be difficult to cover it with anything.

As I am getting them replaced I don't really mind further damage to the downpipes themselves, I am just wondering if this will have a lasting negative effect on the engine if I keep riding it... i use it to drive to work you see.

Gazdaman - I may be interested as long as they are stainless steel or better, would not want mild steel or iron

They're standard ones, whatever they're made of. Look to be in decent nick though.

The standard pipes are mild steel, and will rust like pig iron.

If you've got a set that have been sat in a garage, you'll find they rust through even quicker, and they'll likely have started rusting from the inside anyway!

The design of th standard pipes is rubbish, so you get lots of dirt / mud / salt sitting ontop of the pipes.

I got some stainless pipes off eBay. Make sure they are similar to the originals, so you still have access to the oil filter! Also, alot of them don't have the crossover pipes between 1+2 and 3+4.

EDIT:
Think it was these, cant remember the seller name;
eBay linky

Be aware that it's DK motorcycles though! Bad reputation as far as I can remember!

Mine have been wrapped up in a bin bag stored indoors. They got swapped for a full Micron system at some point in the past.

Scorpy if you want them, gimme a shout and we can sort something out, they're just taking up space in my garage.
