I have done this and can do it fine, smoothly changes up to the next gear, and i find is alot smoother than using the clutch when doing faster speeds, i havent and won do clutchless down changes but my question and worry is is this clutchless gear shifting going to fuck my gear box? and will it fuck it quicker than if i were to use the clutch?
If its fine and wont damage the gear box, how does it work? how does the gear setup allow this to happen?
cheers.

Clutchless upchanging is fine when done right. I've heard doing the same down the box is bad.

I dont know why.

I think you can go down the box without doing any damage (don't quote me on that) just there is a danger than you can lock the back up when done wrong. Occationally I knock it down one without the clutch when overtaking with no trouble, wouldn't do it when your slowing down though.

If your technique is good then yes you can change up without damaging your gears, going down is a different matter. I don't do it myself as if the technique is off you will fuck your gearbox.

Personally I believe that if it makes your upchanges smoother then you've been using the clutch like an on/off switch, and could do with more clutch practise.

Upshifting technique should be a case of very gentle pressure under the gear change and a blip of the throttle. The blip takes the load off of the gear box allowing it to slip naturally from one gear to the next.

My understanding is that the upshift puts the rpms into the natural range for the gear above, however the same doesn't happen when downshifting which can snap the teeth.

Soooooooooo many posts on this now.

Motorbike gearboxes are sequential, designed to go up gears without a clutch if done right.

Not go down gears. Safe thing to do is go up without a clutch, go down with a clutch.

A more accurate description would be that motorcycles have a sequential crash box.

Yeh sorry about a repeat post, i know there are loads but i couldnt find the answer i was looking for when searching. Using the clutch to change with, there isnt much you can do wrong so i think my technique is fine (pull in clutch then knock the peg up to the next gear...). Cheers for the response, so as long as im doing it right ( i would assume a clean gear change would be the sign) then it wont damage my gears.
Nice one.
