A while ago for reasons I can't quite remember (think it was to familiarise myself with the components/design of a bike) I started modelling a sports-type bike in SolidWorks.

Been adding bits and bobs to it when I get time at work (mostly lunchtimes and when bored) and I guessed it might be quite interesting to someone, so I put some screenshots together.

I was using anything and everything as far as reference material goes, so it's not really a direct copy of any bike. Don't know into how much detail i'll go yet, but i'll at least try and get it looking like a bike. The fairings are probably going to be the most challenging part. Lots of different surfaces going off in all sorts of directions, so that will be fun.

Laying out the basic geometry for the bike (rake, trail, wheelbase etc). Think I took the figures from a Desmo

Model the bottom yoke

And then the top

Start on the basic frame geometry (completely guessed this)
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v215/agrophoto/bike_CAD__0004_Layer18.jpg

Looks about right

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v215/agrophoto/bike_CAD__0002_Layer20.jpg

Add in some detailing

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v215/agrophoto/bike_CAD__0001_Layer21.jpg

So yeah, that's where I'm at with it. Going to have to carry on as and when I get time, but it's been pretty interesting so far. Don't think i'm going to bother modelling the whole engine. Just stick some fairings on it Wink

Here it is with some indication of colour .

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v215/agrophoto/bike_CAD__0000_Layer22.jpg

Suppose I'll do a full photo-render of it when it's done. That should look pretty cool.

Very cool, how long you been doing it?

I have a model of a laverda jota engine you can have, though the valvegear is shit and mostly missing, and the flywheel is made of wood Thumbs Up

Off an on for about a month I suppose. Not really happy with the wheels looking at it again, but can always go back and modify them.

(I had to google a Lavarda) What format is it in? I'll drop it in and see how it looks. Or by model do you mean actually made from foam etc?

Solidworks model, not sure what version, or if it'd be compatable, and actually thinking back it's probably a funny size, we had the bore and stroke specified and theyre quite big, but it's a rotating crank and pistons, even if the top end is laughably shit. I'll see if the files are emailably small next time I'm in uni.

Will it have the correct movements?

I've used a few CAD programs over the past few years at college, and it so satisfying once you get to know them.

Solidworks also has that advantage of true 3D and colour, it really looks the part, well done!

If you've dimensioned it all correctly, we could try putting it in our CNC machine Wink

Got myself SW as well ... have not gone as far as trying to model an entire bike yet thought ... looking good Thumbs Up

I'd never used a CAD package before but I followed one of the tutorials and before long I was competent enough to design my own yokes for my GSX1400 and then sent the files off to get them made.

Not spent nearly enough time on this as I thought I'd be able to. Mostly because the battery on my laptop is so shit it doesn't work without being plugged in, so effectively means I can't do anything with my laptop on trains, planes etc. Which was where I was doing most of it Rolling Eyes

Nevertheless, had a bit of a play recently and added a few more components.

This was where I was up to:

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v215/agrophoto/bikeupdate2__0018_Layer1.jpg

Wasn't happy with the rear wheel at all (too simple) so added some more hub detailing:

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v215/agrophoto/bikeupdate2__0017_Layer2.jpg

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v215/agrophoto/bikeupdate2__0016_Layer3.jpg

Time to add in the swingarm:

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v215/agrophoto/bikeupdate2__0015_Layer4.jpg

basic shape...

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v215/agrophoto/bikeupdate2__0014_Layer5.jpg

Detailing

working out where the shock goes (guessed at this)

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v215/agrophoto/bikeupdate2__0008_Layer12.jpg

modelled it on an ohlins type rear shock

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v215/agrophoto/bikeupdate2__0006_Layer14.jpg

Subframe next:

basic shape:

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v215/agrophoto/bikeupdate2__0003_Layer17.jpg

detailing:

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v215/agrophoto/bikeupdate2__0002_Layer18.jpg

rear sprocket was pretty simple (just a pattern)

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v215/agrophoto/bikeupdate2__0005_Layer15.jpg

Thats pretty much it. Only a few more components have gone in really but definitely starting to look like a bike Cool

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v215/agrophoto/bikeupdate2__0001_Layer19.jpg

In solid, with colour indications:

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v215/agrophoto/bikeupdate2__0000_Layer20.jpg

Will keep it updated as and when I do more. Might be quite slow though.
