PostPosted: 20:35 - 22 Apr 2009    Post subject: 1000cc fear! Reply with quote

As you all probably know i've been on the hunt for my first big bike for ages now and i've been looking at literally every type of bike, I think I've found THE ONE Laughing

A firestorm seems to fit the bill so far, low price and everything (yet to check insurance) but I have a couple of problems:

1 - I have a sort of fear of my first big bike being 1000cc Shocked
2 - Explaining to my family (all non bikers) that I want to go from a 125 to 1000

My alternative would be a Daytona 600 because the insurance is quite cheap (TPO) but they are much more expensive to buy.

Any Help appreciated (again) Thumbs Up

Firestorms are hardly cutting edge in the 1000cc stakes. They are pretty sedate and don't have the oomph that you would get from a modern 1000cc bike. I would say they are not much (if any) faster than a decent 600.

Actually they are fairly dull (apologies any Firestorm owners).

you are new so im sure you are expecting the insurance to bend you over no matter what bike you get.
modern sport 600 will have way more performance than a firestorm.
firestorm has a real problem.
tank range its shockingly bad.
ride 300 miles and have to stop at least 4 times and you get fed up.
i like the bike they are an easy ride handling isnt awesome but its way better than you need when setting out as a rookie.
go on the internet and try some insurance quote sites.
enter a load of different bikes, make a list of the ones you can afford and move on from there.
theres no point someone telling you that a 98 r1 is the best bike in the world to learn on if you cant insure it.

I ran ONE quote (bike insurer) and it came to £1070 TPO where the Daytona was £400. Maybe if I wait till i'm 19 in June?? or ring a round

Maybe not. It's only got 25kg more dry weight than my 600, and it is nippy enough restricted. How cheap of one can you get?

What are you looking for in a bike. The bravado of a 1000cc bike or the fit in with the chavs 600cc, ok a bit general there but hey ho.

Don't look at engine size. find a bike that fits first. Then decide what you want to do with it. then how it looks then decide the engine, the latter will almost be decided for you.

I had a mate who wanted a 1000cc but insurance was too high, didn't want to be the chavy type so the 600cc was out ended up with a 750 GSXR. suited him down to the ground, another mate ended up with a VFR800, another mate due to his size ended up with an Africa Twin 750. I ride A Varadero 1000cc because it does what I want and it fits me. I would have liked the Africa Twin with a bit more oomph but they didn't do them and the KTM Adventure wasn't proven and the GS was way too much and it just lacked something in the style department.

Any bike over 500cc will be more than enough for you after being on a 125cc.

It's just an idea at the moment. Mainly because it's the perfect price to buy compared to the Daytona

It's just stereotyping, innit?

I personally see most Gixxer/R6 riders as chavs, but only if it's blue and white.
Gixxer Blue/white = Blue Subaru with gold Alloys
R6 Blue/White = Mitsubishi Lancer Evo (with gold alloys)

...but this is just my opinion...

It's a bit confusing really, the bikes which are expensive have low insurance and the cheaper bikes have high insurance. This is what I've found so far (roughly):

Daytona 600 (2.5 to 3k) - Insurance 400ish tpo

Speed Four (2.5 to 3k) - Insurance 400ish tpo

Firestorm (1.5k+) - Insurance 1050 tpo

Hornet 600 (1.8k+) - Insurance 800ish tpo

ZX6R, GSXR, R6, RR don't ask! Laughing

I'm quite surprised you even got such a high quote for a storm! There's a fresher at my uni who'se 18 and got a firestorm after regrettably selling his hornet thinking that he didn't need it at uni! I asked him how much he was paying for insurance since it was group 14, and he said 430 TPFT with 1 year NCB. If that's the case, then get 1 year NCB and you'll probably pay the same. A firestorm is in the same league as an SV1000 and duke 1000ss so it's not supersports but more of a roadster.

Have you tried ringing companies and used tesco compare as a starting point? Statistically the premiums make sense since I've hardly ever seen a daytona 600, and most seem to be owned by well mannered 30-50 somethings so expect claims to be low. Likewise with a firestorm... most people tended to go for the TL1000S back in the day despite its reputation.

Good luck with the insurance hunt. You can ask instigator for opinions on all those bikes you've mentioned... he's owned ALL bar the daytona!

Out of the bikes listed. I would probably go for the firestorm as well.

Twins take restriction better than 4's ( I think the daytona 600's were 4's not triples?)

They aren't that powerfull anyway about the same as a sports 6.

I think you can definatly get that quote down quite a lot as said, I can insure one for about 400 quid instead of the grand for my r6.

As much as it pains me, thought about an sv650. Will take restriction much better and 'should' be cheaper on insurance fuel ect.

I can bet the restrictors will come out though. I said mine would stay in for the 2 years, mine last 2 months,

A restricted 1000 -_-
That does not sound nice.

Many 600's will restrict nicely, as will the 400 ninja and the new (ish) 33 bhp ninja.
I dont really know of any other 400s :s.
I guess you cant really count a 250 as a 'big bike' so my advice is choose a 600 then find out if it restricts well.
You dont want something that will be really sluggish on a restriction.

That they do, my 400 after restriction was crap but the SV is really good as it has more torque and power in the lower down revs.
The higher revs get strangled by restriction expecially in the inline 4's as that's where their power is.
Also I think you should go for a bit with fuel injection if you can as the cost of restriction washers is insane(£170 + labour = just over £250), unless you can find some second hand washers cheap.

I've consistantly managed to get 100 miles from a tank out of my old Firestorm, perhaps I just ride like a girl though.

The tank range isn't that bad, I'd be more wary of the Honda standard issue shite CCT.
