Arrow Alcohol up 2% from midnight = 5p on a pint.
Arrow Tobacco up 2% from 6pm today
Arrow Petrol/diesel up 2p in September, then inflation+1p a year until 2013
Arrow £2000 trade in for cars over 10 years old

Looking at those key points from a purely selfish point of view :-

Alcohol. No surprise there, but I don't drink that much - it might make a difference of a couple of quid a year.

Cigarettes. No surprise, but I don't smoke anymore, they can do what they like there.

Fuel. Again no surprise, tax on fuel is a joke. Given my average mileage and consumption, it'll cost me an extra £20 in the first year.

Car scrappage scheme. Pointless. I don't buy new cars. There's already good discounts to be had when buying new, so the dealers aren't losing much with their £1000 "contribution" anyway. The £1000 the government are providing is coming from my pocket. It'll push the prices of second hand cars up, as everyone will think their £300 shitter is worth £2000.

Income tax. Only affects people on £150k a year. Which is not me.

UK Economy. I'll skip the bullshit figures, thanks.

Jobs and Training. Great, if you're sixth form or long term unemployed and under 25. I'm not.

Housing. The stamp duty holiday is OK, but I'm unlikely to be moving this year, so pointless.

Government Savings. Yeah, right.

Benefits. I have no kids. If you can't afford them you shouldn't have them - but that's another discussion.

Savings. Anything that avoids me having to pay tax is good. All I need now is surplus income to actually put into an ISA.

Environment. More bullshit figures.

Help for Business. Will be looking into reclaiming tax for loss making businesses.

Pensioners. I'm not a pensioner.

So all in all, nothing that's going to improve my lot significanty, which is exactly what I expected.

I just always get the impression that anything this government does is largely ineffectual. I mean they could promise us all a unicorn that shits money in 2010 because they know they're not going to be in government when it comes to deliver.

They'll then complain about it when who ever is in power doesn't deliver on their unicorn pledge.

After David Cameron sat down, all the jeering and waving of pamflets (or whatever) just made them sound even more like a shower of fat braying toffs.

I mean is that the level of our politics? A crowd of over weight, over paid tosspots shouting boo yaa at each other across some mahogany wood work? I don't watch much parliament on the telly but seeing that really underlines how completely fucking stupid our politicians look.

Maturity? Something tells me if I sat in a meeting at work and someone said something I disgreed with, if I brayed down my nose at them I'd get kicked out of the fucking room. No one is going to slap me on the back in private school camaraderie and say "Gosh Tarquin, you really showed them, splendid job!"

And these people are our alternative to what currently sits in power? Fucking hell! We really are doomed!!

The whole £2000 scheme is utterly ridiculous. Half of what has made this recession so severe is the culture of people buying things they can't afford on credit. When the economy takes a downturn, people either can't get credit or don't want to, so business suffers. Government's solution: Give people an incentive to purchase on finance something they really can't afford in the first place.

Also, having half the money come from the industry will simply mean that dealers put up the price they are willing to let the car go for by a grand. Where you may have been able to push them to 10k yesterday, when this comes in they won't go lower than 11k.

I don't think I have ever seen a more ridiculous government intervention into a market than this. What's next? Trade in a CRT television and get £200 off a new 50 inch Sony Bravia. Trade in last years laptop and get a ton off a new one? Because that's just what everyone needs during a recession isn't it?

If you are running a car over ten years old, chances are, even with a 2k discount you can't afford a new car, so it will be on finance.

ENVIRONMENT
• Britain commits to cut carbon emissions by 34% by 2020
• An extra £1bn to help combat climate change by supporting low-carbon industries
• £525m for offshore wind projects over the next two years
• £435m support for energy efficiency schemes for homes, firms and public buildings
• £405m to encourage low-carbon energy and advanced green manufacturing

£2,365,000,000 all told (assuming as usual that the government and media have used the American billion, not the British billion (a million million).

F**k off and die. The country is going down the shitter in both social and economic terms and you are spending this much extra money to "save the environment"? Get your own house in order before fixing everyone elses. This extends to the amount of money we piss away in foreign aid as well. I don't want my tax money going into a tin-pot african dictator's pockets. I want it spent on improving our failing standards of education and getting people off the dole.

• Public borrowing to increase to £175bn this year
• Borrowing levels to be £173bn, £140bn, £118bn and £97bn in years after

In the 5 years outlined there we will borrow: £703,000,000,000 (£703 billion) assuming that nothing forces him to deviate and borrow more. Surely that won't happen eh? I mean, it's not as if forecasts for this year were to borrow £30 billion?

But wait, governments deal with huge figures, surely in terms of the big picture that isn't really all that much money, you silly scare-mongering madman.

Ok, let's look at the Government's own figures and projections.
Total Tax Receipts:
2007-08: £548 billion
2008-09: £531 billion
2009-10: £496 billion (projected)

To quote the budget report:
Net taxes and national insurance contributions (NICs) in 2008-09 were £11.2 billion below the Pre-Budget Report forecast. With the economy expected to contract sharply in the first half of 2009 and to stabilise in the second half of the year, net taxes and NICs are expected to fall by a further 8.0 per cent in 2009-10. Receipts are only expected to be above their 2007-08 peak in 2011-12. This
is broadly consistent with the economic forecast for the level of real GDP to recover its early 2008 peak by late 2011.

So even on their own optimistic projections (forecasting 3.5% growth rate in 18 months time is about as realistic as forecasting first contact with an advanced alien race on the 19th June 2010 at 13:42:12 just outside the Cat and Fiddle) tax revenues are falling like crazy and we are borrowing a 1/3rd of the government revenue? The country already has more debt in real terms than at any point in our history thanks to Gordon "the best chancellor in a century".

Why wasn't this man ripped a new arsehole? Why are 30% of the country still likely to vote for this party come the next election?

Massive edit there thanks to the BBC making a monumental cock up on that page while I was researchin this post.

Fucked if I know.

Employed, hardworking and not claiming benefits, therefore to thank me they will make my fuel and drink more expensive, and continue to flush my hard earned down the crapper.

Income tax, should be 90% or more for over 150k, nobody needs that much money.

Housing, don't have a stamp duty holiday, charge a fair rate for it, across the board in the first place, or fuck it off altogether and do your sums properly at the income tax stage.

Jobs and training, nonsense, wasted money on useless courses in useless government approved subjects, employment will rise again when the economy begins to sort itself out, and low and behold the epic non-spend on improving training for under 25 knuckle draggers will be heralded a success.

ISA improvements are good, but why do they tax your savings in the first place (money that has been earned and taxed already), and why is the only option of tax free savings a paltry 3k a year. About time it had an update.

Few handful of CEO's in the "low carbon industries" will do very nicely for themselves out of that. That's for certain. Good time to be a company pushing the bullshit eco lines.

Meanwhile they scrape together a mere 50m to sort out the crumbling concrete blocks we accomodate our armed forces in, oh good show.

Shower of shite all round in my opinion.

Are you a socialist? , socialists do not understand economics at all and think punititive taxation is a great idea.

Five serious points:

Golden goose syndrome , where the government gets too greedy and thus ends up killing the golden goose, people on more than 150K p.a are more than capable of moving away. Many of my clients were non doms and decided to go overseas , and thus instead of 40% or 32.5% of everything over 45K , the government may well receive NOTHING.

A similar situation was with Al Fayed in that he had a special arrangement whereby he paid 25~40million in income tax each year namely because his tax affairs were so convoluted even the best HMRC inspectors couldn't make headway.

Labour in 2003 said no you must pay all your tax, so what did he do? , he moved to Monaco instead. Hence losing 40 million a year.

Remember we are not a closed economy people hace choices and thus the government might kill the golden goose for short term benefit but then the goose is dead.

Point 2

Regaenomics and the laffer curve, this is discredited economic science however there are some trueisms in it. Lets say Wildgoose earns 100K , there is 100% income tax, do you bother to get up and go to work in the morning or not?. Same at 90% , 80% 70% 60% and so on at what point do you bother to get up and go to work?.

Point 2.1

Why strive to acheve more? , usually high wages are (usually but not always) are an indicator of work put in and risk taken, I used to go work for a company the bosses took all the risk and took 40 years to build it up. My risk outlay is minimal , the risk outlay of the bosses was huge. Why bother to take such risks if you are not rewarded for it? , socialism in China had huge problems in manufacturing , a factory would open everybody was paid the same regardless of output, and thus people 'went to work' and went into the factory to sleep all day. What is the incentive to innovate take risk etc?

Point 3

All taxes are paid for by the person or people who utilise the goods and or services of the taxed body.

Tell me aside from basic living costs why do you work?.

Run with me here...

Lets say you want a Ducati 999S which is 10K, at 0% tax you need 10,000 , with 20% income tax you need £12500 as your after tax income right? , at 40% tax you need £13400 gross before tax to have £10000 left over. Ok so tax is 90% you need £100K to have £10000 left over to buy your 999S.

Stilll with me?,

Copied fromy my other thread in another forum.

How do business men and women make their money? , they sell products and services such people do this to get money and a certain life style they want things as much as you and I want things.

Its because boiled down the lowest members of society pay all the taxes.

All taxes are paid for by the end users of the product and or service.

Lets play

VAT 17.5% , this increases the cost of everything yes?.

Overall why do you go to work (if you do) and make money ? , because you want things , essentials such as food / water/ heat / rent etc.

Wealthy people have similar demands also but they have covered the essentials many times over , ah I want to buy item X which costs £500000. With tax at 40% this wealthy person has to make at least 1 million. And how pray tell does this person make 1 million?. He sells products and services to poorer people, because his target margin is now higher ie needing 1 million instead of £500,000 he jacks up his prices to cover his income tax.

This ends up in an endless cycle ah lets tax people more (2011 has a 65% income tax rate btw) and so people jack up prices even more to get their target margins. Etc...

So who ends up paying the tax?.

This sequence of events is repeated over and over all through the country. And it holds water with both indirect and direct taxes and thus when Darling says 50% tax on super rich , what he really means is that the wealthy who have such power will increase their prices to keep their margin and in effect YOU yes YOU pay the extra tax.

Point 4

50% tax rate just means that people have 50 reasons in every pount and 50 pence in each £ to avoid tax. Felix Denis built his empire in the 1960s and 1970s, this was a time when tax rates were above 95% , in a book where he is interviewed he states that I built my empire when taxes were close to 100% , so I built up my capital bases instead....

Look at it this way:

Wildgoose earns 200K and lets say pays 90% on all 200K he is left with 20K.

Wildgoose goes Plc (private limited company) pays himself dividends of 200K, Wildgoose now pays 32.5% income tax after corporate tax of 21%.

Wildgoose goes Plc , builds up a mass of money a huge mass of money and turns it into shares and or virtual company assets, wild goose sells such assets and pays 18% capital gains tax.

The more you tax the bigger the incentives occur to avoid tax.

Point 5

The UK government is going Viv Nicholson , ie spending like crazy , and last month had a failed bond auction. A failed bond auction means they either have to jack up taxes even more (impossible) or print money, printing money and putting it into general circulation means hyperinflation baby, just like Zimbabwe. So far 225bn has been printed out luckily for us this is narrow money , but 7p out of every £1 was taken out of your pocket in terms of purchasing power very few people noticed (its why prices are shooting up for food). In Zimbabwe people are paid trillions of dollars an hour.

In a VERY bad situation when the UK government starts putting QE money (printed money) into circulation as wide M4 money and starts paying its bills with this money the velocity of money shoots up massively. The price of everything goes up , you go to your boss and demand more money because the price of everything has gone up.

This causes the price of everything to go up again and again you demand more money from your boss because the price of everything has gone up.

This causes the price of everything to go up again and again you demand more money from your boss because the price of everything has gone up.

etc etc

And pretty soon a standard living wage is £150,000 and you are caught in the 50% tax band.

Don't believe me? , consider this a HIGH paid job in 1971 paid £126 a month, NORMAL inflation means £126 a month is laughable even by the early 1990s. We are entering a serious period of inflation due to money printing and thus your pay may well be £150,000 a year except £150,000 only buys you exactly the same standard of living as you have now, but you now have to pay 50%.

many places usually market places and wholesalers and the odd supermarket trip, I've found prices on bread/ milksemi stable , canned goods up 3-7p on everything worst being rice pudding which was 51p now 72p. Out of season stuff normally goes up due to transport cost cucumbers being a prime example but I don't eat that.

Meat is attrocious though whole salers if you can buy it in bulk is the absolute cheapest place you can buy Slaney PAD cap off (Peeled and deveined , cap muscle removed) top side used to be £1.92 per kilo , it is now £3.15 a kilo.

Cakes have gotten smaller and stayed at the same price , a victoria sponge cake is £2.15 for a headlamp sized cake , it is the same price yet 23 grammes less than 2 weeks ago = price inflation ie pay more for less.

Well that all depends if what you want just happens to be on offer that week....

My weekly shopping has not got any cheaper since christmas. And yes i have a killer instinct for bargins and will stock up when the stuff i need is cheap.
Its stuff like bread, butter, milk and sugar that are not being to activliy discounted at the supermarkets. Staple stuff we have to buy.
Bought a bag of sugar the other day, it was 93p...... Was only 75p a month ago in the same supermarket....

The budget is a total joke, all they have done is the usual take, take, take on the usual suspects.
Thank god i don't drink or smoke....

As to the car thing.... I'm livid as i could have done with that extra £1954 in my pocket....(2K less scrap value) Having just bought a new car... Thankfully it was funded for me, but all the same i'm gutted....

As much as the media fails to surprise me with anything that doesn't toe the government line, the fact that this hasn't been more widely reported is criminal.

When the government aren't considered low enough risk to invest in, you know we're up shit creek without a paddle.

Personally, I think Darling will be lucky to find any institution willing to lend such wads of money. Our credit rating is plunging fast.

Excellent post WildGoose.

Err, what do you buy supermarket cheapo weekly offer crap and eat no fruit, veg and the like or something?

Average food inflation is up 13% in the last few months, day to day living is rising at an alarming rate.

As to the new tax bands as itchy said, wait till hyper-inflation occurs, everybody will be in higher tax bands but you will pay £20 for a loaf of bread, less in and more out, standard of living takes 2 steps back.

Ummm, it was itchy's post, our resident economics expert.

Its a hell of a thing when you think about it, I feel really stupid after reading that. The things this government has gotten away with...

What bothers me (as I said) is the tories who are the next best thing aren't much better.

I usually never notice food prices, but I have noticed that certain things seem to be more expensive; namely meat.

Thumbs Up

In theory the prices of crap cars shouldn't go up as it ends in March 2010 and you need to have been the registered keeper of the car for 12 months, so if you bought a cheap car now it would fall outside the time window of getting £2,000 for it.

Itchy, where would you place your money now then?

Inflation looming, sterling diving if (when?) we get a bond market collapse people will be out for assets, gold could become a global backed currency no?

Shotguns and tinned food?.

Pass, I don't know , if mega investors like Warren Buffet can lose $16bn in a day , and Lee Ka Shing can lose $8bn in a week I'm not going to be able to do much better.

Gold isn't safe either 3 reasons , China vs the IMF China wants the IMF to sell 100~500 tons of gold, India has 2000 tons of gold in the form of scrap gold and can flood the market via seizures. Gold from Gold bullion vault is stored in RBS vaults, guess who owns RBS?.

Ah yes shotgun n beans scenario. Well if a lot of people go gold and it gets devalued by such sellouts what about the next one in line, silver? Failing that its going on a scrap metal hunt.

Erm Chocolate coins?

https://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/1e8cd910-2f57-11de-a8f6-00144feabdc0.html

Quote:
F Times: Chocolate coins are now deemed safer than gilts

“On Wednesday, for example, the cost of protecting five-year gilts was 95 basis points – meaning it costs £95,000 a year to insure £10m of bonds – up from 18 basis points last summer (albeit down from a peak earlier this year).

But if that is embarrassing enough, the cost of insuring the chocolate giant Cadbury was on Wednesday far lower, around 50bp.

A company that peddles chocolate coins, in other words, is currently deemed a better credit bet than the British Treasury itself.”

See how better/worse off you will be here:

https://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/8008685.stm

Don't be afraid to post the result if you're going to be better off than before the budget. Razz

Me: If you lead a similar lifestyle next year, the indications are that you will be £96.01 better off.
