I was talking to my russian housemates earlier about how I'm having difficulty even getting interviews at the minute and they suggested it might be because of my polish surname.

They said they used different names on their cv's to look more normal so they could get interviews at least and go from there.

Now if say I decided to use my mothers maiden name on my cv and then revealed my real (registered) surname if I got the job, could they then fire me for it?

I'd say no because it could look racist so they wouldn't risk it, since essentially, it is just a name and not like I made up a degree or 6.

What be your experiences/opinions?

I've done this , many people are surprised to see me with the surname of Morgan or Cooper, I bs them with something like my dad is an Englishman / Welshman.

They never follow strict anti money laundering guidelines (they are supposed to check your NI card and your passport to see if you have the right to work in the UK but I've been seldom checked).

The problem is do you really want to work for firms which discriminate on such bases?.

EDIT ~ these jobs were only short term jobs anyway like industrial baker or meat packing , bus washing etc.

so if you tell them for example your name is shaun smith, they employ you and then you reveal your real name, i reckon they could say that you were deceptive and un-trustworthy, then sack you, whereas if you tell them in interview your reasoning for using the different surname they may be more receptive and understanding. just my

We had a number of Indian employees at one of my previous employers, and it seemed common practice to have a "family" name and a "business" name. Another Anglisized his surname from "Eisenbaum" to "Ellington".

They'd have to have a pretty specific case (like fraud) against you for choosing to be known by a different surname in order to fire you.

You can actually call yourself anything you damn well please, it only becomes an issue when legal documents are involved (see all the passport hassle I had because my surname was changed as a kid by useage rather than legally).

It would be easy to explain your reasonings if anyone questioned it, just make up some balls about falling out with whomever's name it is and wanting to use something different, rather than saying 'I thought you were a bunch of racists so I changed it to get an interview'. Then amazingly make up with the person you fell out with and revert. Thumbs Up

I was just going to say something like my mum and dad split up so I've been using my mums maiden name but legally, I still have my dads surname.

It's such a dodgy subject they probably wouldn't want to argue about it.

I would have thought the better lie on your CV might be something like "I am a comedian, many people find me funny, I will be an excellent addition to your workforce, people will not grow tired of me quickly" etc etc. HTH Thumbs Up

Change the record tool, it's hilarious that you try to suggest people will grow tired of me immediately after using such a tired cheap shot at me.

You kids, you're so stupid it's funny.

Kids? Where? Come on Shaunie, to be funny, you have to be able to poke fun at yourself a little. And take some heckling. Which I don't think you can quite carry just yet....

And by the way, is there such a tool to change the record? I mean, are we talking about iTunes or something?

It is very easy to change your name by deed poll. Or in your case Dead Pole.

If it is a job that requires a CRC or CTC check - then stick with your real name.
If not, then simply Anglify it. !!
May I suggest Patterson.

Only stumbling block is, do you look Polish ?

I think changing your name is fine. You can pretty much call yourself what you like, and be called by another name. I think it only matters for important documentation such as passport, driving licence etc.

There was an episode of Kilroy on a while ago where he had 2 guests on - a student and his girlfriend. Both were huge U2 fans, and the bloke had changed his name to include over 50 words related to U2 - so from being plain old John Smith, he became John Bono The Edge Joshua Tree etc etc etc etc etc Smith. His girlfriend had done the same sort of thing, but could only manage around 30 words connected to U2 (i guess her boyfriend had taken most of the best words).
Kilroy just looked at them sitting there all smug and studenty, and asked them what they did when they were filling out application forms etc. They suddenly dropped their smug look and it was obviously apparent that they had never actually considered this when they made the name change.

Mr. Green

I'm struggling to see how this relates specifically to Shaun's situation.........but, i suppose there is a link: Kilroy = daytime TV = (the bastion of the) unemployed = Shaun.

Thumbs Up

Sounds stupid but you can tell, a bit hard to describe but the general facial features give it away as well as height and their penchant for the skin head look.

Shouldn't be an issue. We employ lots of chinese staff, and most of them have a 'western' name that's easier to say. Just say you use an english name in general conversation to avoid embarrassment when people can't pronounce your full name.
