There's no such thing as a good overdraft, infact I laugh in the faces of everyone with an overdraft. The banks try and whisk you in with a good deal and the usual 'you might be stuck in a train station at 11pm and no way of getting home' bullshit, it's all just a big sales technique! The ammount of times my girlfriend has owed money due to her overdraft is unbelievable, it's always landing her in trouble!

If this is your first job I'd start teaching myself some self restraint and budget for the month! Thumbs Up

As for which bank I don't think it matters if you've only been working a month, they'll all start you off with a shit one, could try playing them off each other insurance quote style?

All you can do is apply, but these days unless you are a student or on good wages, you are unlikly to get a O/D straight away.
It will take a couple of weeks to get sorted anyway.

Better to talk to Abbey and see if they will let you have a short term one to tide you over.
Then make sure you pay it back and never use it.

Biggest thing many people forget about a O/D is that it can be asked to be repaid at anytime.

i got an overdraft at 18, even with a bad credit rating from a contract phone cock up at 16 (lied about age online etc).

started at £100, upped it to £150 6 months later to satisfy a bill that i couldnt afford.

when i got a pay increase i upped it to £200. im with natwest, and basically all you need is a valid reason for getting one.

mine was ''i want an overdraft that is just under my weekly income so i can never get too far in debt'', they liked it, called me sensible, then 48 hours later i had an extra £100, 150, and 200 as i increased it.

I'm with Natwest too and they gave me one at 18 (so that was a while ago now). Started at £200, last time I checked they had upped the limit to about £4k Rolling Eyes I've never even asked for it to be increased!

My advice, last year I got a 1k one from nationwide, now i'm in a total of 3k debt, at the age of 19, so DON'T get one, no matter how desperate you are.

Can't you borrow a little off parents or friends and then transfer it into your bank account, at least that way you coan't get yourself into deep sh1t like me, and friends and family are alot more understanding than banks, especially at the moment

I've just been stung with this and I now have to find £110 a month on top of everything else to pay off my overdraft. Think for a LONG time before getting an overdraft as it WILL lead to more debt. I'd advise anyone to avoid credit/lending for as long as possible as it never leads to good things and unless you're super careful you WILL end up with more debt.

I have account with Natwest and went a few quid over drawn and found that the charges they added on were more than what i had gone into the red with.

So quite simply i get a overdraft limit setup took no more than 24hours to take place so say i go -£50 for e.g. instead of paying a massive fee on top , i just pay that £50 back when i get it.

You should really look at better managing your finances unless this really is a one off situation.

It's OK to have a £100 o/d for the end of the month, just in case I have a puncture or whatever but I had a serious o/d for over 5 years and I fecking HATED it and do everything I can to never be in that situation again.

I've got a £1.8k overdraft with natwest, and at 18 i had a 1.5k overdraft. They just keep wanting to up it.

I don't see how it's stupid having an overdraft, i hardly ever use mine and if i do i make sure its paid off straight away.

Nationwide has given me a £10k overdraft facility for the last few years. Useful thing to have.

If you going to get one, do it properly and get a few grand's worth. You'll need to build it up slowly, when I was building mine up it was about a £1k increase every couple of months. If you get a pissy little £250 overdraft you might as well not bother, you'll just fill it up and get charges for exceeding your limit.

Of course, if you have no money management skills and just spend your credit with no hope of paying it back, rest assured I'll laugh in your general direction in a few months for being so silly.

Nationwide don't seem to really care about overdrafts. I can just log into internet baming request a little bit extra, get asked my date of birth and wolah another couple of hundred onto my already largish OD.

I have a £1000 HSBC OD and a £1250 Nationwide OD.
