you need to contact DVLA. they will contact who they have as the registered owner, and confirm who now owns the bike.
and aslong as they confirm that theyve sold you ( or your mate) the bike. they should send you a replacement logbook. ( im guessing the guy he bought it off has lost it?)
just having the new owner suplament is not proof of ownership. so if you get stopped just with that you can get done becasue its still registered to the previous owner.
so yeah, just contact DVLA and explain, they will talk you through it
