When im at about 6k revs and touch the clutch it revs up to like 11k and just revs for about 10seconds and then drops down again. I dont think this is right is it.

And also when it i neutral, it sounds like its groaning and humming deep.

Is my clutch starting to go or gone?

Thanks

Sounds almost like it is sticking.
I Dont know a huge amount about clutches . .

Someone will come along and help you.
Does it do this at all temeratures ?
Or just when hot .
( Maybe usfull to someone )

Is your gear changing okay ?

Is this when you are moving along or just standing still?

So when you're going along at around 6k rpm and touch the clutch, the revs shoot up even though you have let off the throttle.

Make sure your clutch cable is adjusted correctly. Small amount of free play at the bars and when you turn handlebars from left to right it does not engage the clutch.

All hornets rumble/grumble in neutral with the clutch out.

It's just the clutch basket rumbling, it's fine.

If you're in neutral and pull the clutch in it should stop.

By the way if you go along in gear and ping the clutch without making any changes to your throttle input the revs will shoot up. Unless you're having other slipping or dragging issues with the clutch I wouldn't worry about replacing it.

bringing this up again,

When accelerating hard, it just shoots up, i dont know what slipping sould or feels like but i think it is.

Would this be a new clutch if it was indeed slipping,? or just new plates and springs?

Thanks

It could be dodgy oil.

Have you recently put fully synthetic oil in the engine?

Do hornets have a cable or hydraulic clutch?

If its hydraulic, the push rod sometimes gets corroded and sticks. That's an easy fix, you remove the clutch piston, slide the rod out, clean it with wire wool, lube and refit.

Could just be worn clutch plates. Could be glazed plates if the clutch has had some abuse (and if it's slipping a fair bit, they will land up glazed).

Could also be notches on the edge of the clutch basket where the tags on the friction plates hit it. These would need dressing.

How many miles has it done?

Hornet is cable clutch (assuming it is a 600cc hornet and not a 900)

When you pull the clutch on the right of the bike (while sat on it) you will see the clutch arm move. is it moving fully and freely?

Get the bike warm, standard gearing you will get 60mph in first. What does yours get? If you are lower chances are the clutch is slipping or not returning correctly (safe big road, dont break any laws)

Where did you get the bike from? What age? Warrenty?

Get a haynes (or workshop) manual, they are useful
Replace the oil and filter. £30 and you can do it yourself with a spanner + funnel (makes the new oil easier to pour in)

Not sure if this is allowed but Hornets Nest has an active and helpful community. As it is Hornets only any specific issues may be known and pointed out

Basket shouldn't really be notched at 15k miles unless someone has been giving the clutch some abuse (eg wheelies).

Where does your clutch normally bite when your just crusing normally?

Sounds like slipping clutch plates to me, or worn clutch springs. Do the oil change as mentioned above, and ride around 50 miles, let us know how it goes

ok will do this weekend.

Its had a oil change in febuary according to the book, and it looks pretty clean on the dip stick. But seems when i go for it, its like im engaging the clutch, but im not. Almost if the winds doing it. My clutch bites very early on the leaver leaving 10mm or so free play.

Might it be i lossen it abit? if the oil change dont work?

I like my clutch to "bite" almost as soon as i squeeze it, for quick gear changes, but its personal preference.

It doesnt matter how long ago your oil was changed, how many miles ago is more important.

Your clutch should have a bite point that never changes, once your cable has settled (new cables stretch after a while, requiring adjustment). If it still slips after an oil change, check your clutch springs are tight, if they are, new friction plates may be required.

good luck!

Is checking the springs a easy job, not much experience me. But can check most minor things. Or should i ask the garage to have a peek when its serveced next month?

Check the lever free play, you might have over adjusted the clutch lever so it only needs a touch to make it slip.

Not sure about your bike, but on my Ar, drain oil, remove side cover and you should see a large disc held in by 4 bolts, which each have springs between the head of the bolt and the disc. Check the springs arn't broken, and that the bolts are tight. If there all ok, you will need to change the clutch plates (very easy to do in my opinion. took me about 20 mins from start to finish)

Sounds like the clutch needs adjusting. Do it now before you torch the plates and fill your oil strainer with crap & fibres.

Its had a service and done some more miles on it. still same problem but a little better.

Just under hard acceleration it slips and i have to back off the throttle and let the revs come down before i get back on it.

cable has 1/4 inch of free play and seems to return nicely.

so not sure on what to do. What are the usual problem with clutches slipping?

Number one cause of slipping clutch is a sticking cable. If you un-hook it both ends you should be able to get hold of one end of the inner cable and push/pull it with no effort. If you can't fix that and try it.
