They should last quite a while. Do you leave it idling to warm up?

All the best

Without hijacking the thread, idling is bad for them right?

Well it doesn't idle at junctions, it just dies.

It's in the chop shop this week, and is going to get a thorough service with a road test.

I got the bike relatively cheap, a bit of TLC is no expense really.

Hi

A lot of people say to warm up the RS before even riding off. Which seems like a good way to foul the plug and take ages to warm up. Personally I just start it and ride of, and keep the revs down (under 5k) until it has warmed up.

If it is cutting out at junctions quickly then it suggests that the idle speed is too low or someone has screwed up the idle mixture adjustment. Or the choke is left on / stuck on.

All the best

Keith

I always used to wonder why my dt ran like crap after I let it warm up for 10 mins.. Its cos it just fouls the plug..

start it up.. let it tick for a moment till you can take the choke off then ride (gently for a mile or so).. no need to let it idle or rev it to warm it up...

do you need to keep the revs up at lights to stop it dying? sounds like idle adjust is incorrect..

Not under minding you or anything keith, but dont they often suffer from heat seizure? and trying to ride a RS125 under 5k isnt that a bit difficult with the power band a bit higher than that? I would of imagined that the bike would run just as crap cold than it would warm with a fouled plug?

Hi

Some say they suffer from cold seizure, but personally never had that problem (seized when hot, yep).

Running them round at low speed is fine. Sure the power comes in properly at about 8000rpm, but they can easily be plodded around below that (just don't expect to be quick).

While when cold it isn't perfect, at least when it warms up it will be fine while a choked up plug might need replacing before the bike will be OK.

All the best

Keith

I saw a lad pick up his RS125 today, tried to set off, cut out, after it had been in for a service, as he tried he stalled, revs went high on his 2nd launch attempt, then back down as it bogged then back up untill eventually setting off, at well above 5k revs lol.

Rider error probably, but when i've dealt with them they seem to warm up pretty fast an rev up fine afterwards, nevermind. Your experiance trumps mine indefinatly and i want to try both methods now that you bring it up.

Hi

Jetting does change from different models and does make a difference. My (early) one rarely needs the choke to start. Mine will also barely warm up at all if you just leave it idling (indeed, if it is thrashed and then you get caught at lights for a while it cools down below normal running temperature).

All the best

Keith

With that said, the new ones are extremely choked up to pass emissions, thats what he picked up, and the old ones i'm used to heat up fast, maybe running leaner than yours? but they didnt take long to heat up on choke to get to 45 degrees for set off.
I really want an RS, but seeing how they get treated an stuff and the price new does keep me at arms length for buyin one.

Hi

Trouble with leaving them running on choke is the amount of unburnt fuel filling the exhaust and fouling the plug (and also washing oil from bores, etc).

The way they get treated is an issue. Treated well most are fine, but they are in a stupidly high state of tune to get that much power from them (ie, large ports, which give the rings a hard time).

That said mine is off the road with knackered big end bearing at the moment. Really should get it sorted. It is 16 years old and has done about 18000km and is normally thrashed when ridden.

All the best

Keith
