OK I did a search on the forum and still no answer to my Q.

Service times, the book says 12k for a main service, but I was chatting to a chap who said his mate is a mechanic and does not really suggest a main service to be carried out until 24k.

The chap I was speaking to has a 98 R1 and he has no issues what so ever with his bike etc. But has done minor services on his bike every 6k.

Now my question is what times do you chaps get your main service done? 12k? or 24k?

Cheers

Neil

That is because its a 98 r1. It fixes itself.

i do a full service including valve clearances every 3-4000 miles, probably less, i replace cam chains when they need to be done, ive had bikes where ive done over 60000 miles and the cam chains havnt needed to be done,
if you regulaly maintain your bike and treat it well, they will go forever

The engine really, i.e. the valves and clearances etc.

Depends on the bike then. The slingshot GSXR's had the valves done every 4k, my ER-6 it's every 26k.

Hi

If the R1 engine is like the older 5 valve Yamahas then the valves rarely need touching. Problem is that the clearances tighten with age meaning the engine gets quieter as it gets sick.

All the best

Keith

Well, its on 12k at the moment, with varied riding on it plus one trackday.

I am torn now, as I have had various opinions on the R1s valves. I really don't want to waste money if it does not need it.

i service my vfr more frequently than that myself but get my dealer to do a heavy service as i just dont have either the time or the mechanical know how to be tinkering with things like 'valve clearences'

although i do confidently know how to change all my fluids, including brakes and bleeding, spark plugs, filters and bearings so i think its in good hands if my dealer looks after the important stuff for me Smile

never had problems yet...although my vfr is 17 years old its only done a genuine 17400km so i shouldnt expect it to go wrong...yet. and shes a gem so i always make her top priority when it comes to parts and looking after her.

if i could sleep with her i would, however its far too heavy! Laughing

As long as you can afford to fix it if it goes wrong, you've not much to lose really.

Personally, I get it done when the book says to have it done. And I'd never take it to a main stealer to get it done, saves a load of cost that way too!
