I was contacted via YouTube about my recent upload of the Maple Mill fire video.

Quote:
Hello. My name is Shaun Benson. I'm a producer with Pilgrim Films & Television in Hollywood, California. We are doing a series for The Discovery Channel called "Destroyed In Seconds" and I am interested in licensing footage that is on your youtube page. I was wondering if you own the below video "Maple Mill Fire"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iCcBy1jPLe4

If you are the owner of the video, we would be interested in acquiring the footage from you for use on our show. We will pay you money for the video.

We are on an extremely tight deadline to do this story and I would appreciate your help in doing this quickly. Thank you for your help.

Best,
Shaun

So I checked some information out on this so called Shaun Benson and the program he wants the footage for.

Now it seems that Destroyed in Seconds is a real show on The Discovery Channel.

Clicky

And Shaun Benson is a segment producer for the show.

Clicky

The email address seems to come back as legit as on the Pilgrim Films website the email address is [email protected]

Clicky

So I responded to the email address rather than back through the YouTube account which could be anyone over the weekend with this:

Quote:
You contacted me, ms51ves3 on YouTube regarding my video of the Maple Mill fire.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iCcBy1jPLe4

I would be happy for my video to appear in your documentary 'Destroyed in Seconds'. Please email me at this address with more details and I will be more than willing to co-operate and help with the making of your documentary.

I actually have more footage of the fire and would possibly be able to send you the un-edited version if this would be more valuable and more usable to you.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Regards, Mark

And I just had a reply:

Quote:
Mark,

Simon,

Thank you for getting back to me! I'm glad to hear that you are interested in sending your video of the Maple Mill fire! Over the next several days/weeks I will be collecting videos that people like yourself shot of the fire.

For all your videos of the fire, I can offer $250 (USD) if we end up using your footage in the show. I need as much of your footage as possible to make the story work and at the highest quality possible. I will need you to send me the footage either on a DVD/CD . You can send the DVD via our FEDEX account so that you don’t have to pay the shipping. I will have my clearance coordinator email you the contract which I will need you to sign. By signing this contract you still own the rights to your video and you can sell it to other shows in the future if you wish. You are basically just giving us permission to use your footage on our show.

Here is our FEDEX info:

FEDEX Account Number:

# ***-0355-1

ADDRESS:

Pilgrim Films & Television
Attn: Shaun Benson
**** Laurel Cyn Blvd.
Suite 350
North Hollywood, CA *****

I will also need some more information about you that will go on the contract:

Full name:
Address:

Please feel free to give me a call at any time if you have questions or concerns. Thank you again and I do look forward to working with you on this story.

Kind regards,
Shaun

Not sure what I'm supposed to do with this Fedex code but after research it is indeed supposed to be a 9 digit number.

Is it a scam? Should I be wary about somebody offering me money for my video and should I be wary of who I send my name and address too?

Maybe I'm just being really paranoid but things like this just seem too fishy for my liking even with all the supporting evidence.

Sounds legitimate.

Can't you find a number for the company and phone, then ask to speak to Benson?

That's normal for Fedex. They give you the code so they can pay. You just arrange for them to come and pick up the package. Normally we have lots of FedEx packages ready to use so I don't know what you would do assuming you don't have any. I would give him a quick call (use Skype so you're not spending money) and ask him what to do. I am sure he will be used to getting people to send him stuff by FedEx.

Looks 100% legit to me.

oh and seeing as he needs it urgently you should negotiate. Tell him it is his for $500

as an aside... has anyone ever thought about how inflation has really eroded the value of sending 'hilarious' clips to "You've been Framed"? It's still £250 after all these years.

Yes but on the other hand people are no longer trapped into watching such programmes and can get their hilarious clips elsewhere youtube pretty much killed that dumb and dumber programme with Tommy Vance.

Do it, I had someone offer me £300 for a photo I took of Mohammed Bin Sulayem (Vice Chairman of the FIA I believe, or something like that) losing control of the Renault F1 car in a drag race against a Ford GT. Reasonable money in this amateur media business if you're in the right place at the right time Thumbs Up

Although it says they'll only pay you if they end up using the clip in the show. Don't know how you'll follow that up to make sure they keep to their word.

Guess you'll have to watch EVERY new episode of Destroyed in Seconds now to find out.

So really £150 for such a catastrophic waste of your time doesn't seem like such a good deal anymore Wink

I don't think it's broadcast in the UK.

It's on a DVD now. Fedex are collecting it tomorrow afternoon and Shaun is going to get a contract written up.
