Ok, I built a new pc late last year.
2gb ram, amd 3200 x2 athlon 64 am2, nvidia 9500gt pci-e.
Various other bits and xp pro installed.
Well as you know xp seems to clog up over a short while so I thought I would do a fresh install. I booted a live linux cd and changed the documents and settings folder to docs old. Same with windows and program files.
Re installed xp. Obviously didn't delete the partition as my files were on there. Got all my files back and deleted the windows folder and the program files folder. Only kept them incase I needed them later. So everything is fine apart from my computer seems slower. I mean to start up it takes minutes. When I first built it took about 15 seconds!
I can't play games properly because my cpu just goes to 100% and the game stutters. The gfx card can take it easily.
Nothing overheating, I have a ridiculous amount of fans in my case at the moment.
Just wondering is there a way to sort this. I have used ccleaner and de fragged.
cake to everyone that helps. |

Something has gone badly wrong with your new install. </captain obvious>
It really sounds like the install wasn't a full fresh one, and simply "repaired" your existing one, or refreshed it. Did you have to reinstall everything from a clean windows or did it have your programs back in?
It's always always better to start from a completely empty disk. If you're not able to get to this point due to having files you NEED to keep, have a look at either a pendrive or a spare hard drive to back them up to. If you've got a ridiculous amount of movies/music etc it's an especially good idea to get it all backed up as you will be absolutely gutted if you lose it all.
A big phat hard drive is pretty cheap these days from the likes of www.scan.co.uk or www.ebuyer.com and a worthy investment.
Whack all your music etc on that, download the latest set of drivers to the drive.
Take the disk OUT to prevent any probs and install windows to your main one.
Once windows is on, pop the drive back in and reinstall drivers/programs/music etc and enjoy
When you've done that investigate disk image programs (clonezilla is the one I use) and make a snapshot of your clean system. Dead easy to restore then.
