Right to put it briefly i crashed last year and wrote the car off that i hit, i was found 100% at fault and couldn't get a 50/50 no matter how hard i tried. My insurance renewal has come through and it's £990 TPFT for my ER-6 (07 plate), i'm 18 years old and have obviously lost my NCB.

Now here's the problem, i have enough money to pay for it but that would be all the money gone and it's not worth it as i use the car mainly.

I can get it insured TPO for about £630 which i can afford but it's a bit risky, or i could sell it and buy a DRZ-400 SM and insure that for the same price but TPFT.

What do the wise people of BCF reccomend i do? Preferably want a newer bike as i can't afford to keep fixing an older bike because i have to run my car as well.

Cheers, Jack Thumbs Up

Yep, gone on all sorts of comparison sites and called some companys. My renewal was far cheaper than any other insurers though.

Get an older bike that is cheaper to insurance.

Newer bikes are more expensive for the insurance even if just TPO.

Generally you'll get much cheaper quotes if you phone up lots of insurance companies (call all the ones in the back of Bike Trader) and then call back around the cheapest ones playing them off against each other. Will take a few hours but you should be able to save a few hundred that way.

Tried TPFT and fully comp? sometimes they can be cheaper than TPO. worth a try, my car was cheaper fully comp than TPFT.

DRZ400SM also seems rather a waste of money, if that's your priority.
Suspect there's lots of options, as ste suggests if you go for an older bike - and cheaper for TPO.

Try Simply Insurance. I believe they are a new company and as such are offering massive discounts on premiums to drum up trade.

I'm sure they are available through www.thebikeinsurer.co.uk/

I went from around £800 to £350 fully comp. on the Duke Laughing

There was a recent thread on this as well IIRC.

So, you need a plan now to get the price down....

Perhaps getting something like a CG 125... Or bike along that line's. Have a look round for cheaper group bike's, for a year to get some NCB back without breaking the bank... Remember your car ins could also take a hit, due to the claim.
So don't wipe you cash out just to keep your bike on the road. Take a short term hit in street cred, to make a long term saving of your bank balance.

Some sound advice coming here, cheers guys Smile .

I'm working full time rather than going to uni from August and i've got some money saved away for my car insurance for next year already so the money i have now is for whatever i want atm.

Done a few more quotes and i can insure a hornet or a CBR600 (around 01-03 plate) for only £500 which is good considering i'm only 18 as well. Think i'm going to go for one of them 2 bikes as i was actually looking at getting a CBR for my next bike.

Now i've just got to sell mine and find a new one. Cheers for the help guys, all taken aboard Very Happy .

Cheers, Jack Thumbs Up

Get the CBR600F-S. Insurance is relatively cheap too! My riding buddy at uni has 0 NCB, had his license for less than a year and can get insured on a CBR600F-S 51 plate for £40! He's a final year mech eng student; though that said he's in DTUS so he's employed by the MOD.

I guess its the age and desirability of the CBR600 to less hardcore owners that bring prices down. Bloody capable bikes they are, but the CBR600F1 PGM model adds more practicality - centrestand and good pillion. Less likely to have been thrashed too. Perfect all-round sportsbike for the road. Get a PCIII and can on and you'll have a more economical machine!
