Thought it might be worth posting on here just cause some people might be interested. If you're not interested then just don't post, thanks.

Right, LukeVFR on here has a 1.2 8v Smoke Grey Corsa. After a random late night conversation we decided to go halves on funding making it into an XE. Mostly going to be a trackday car but it's going to be road legal too as transporting it would be a nightmare otherwise.

Shell doesn't seem bad, but we have plans and have already decided on a colour scheme, should look quite nice we think, lol.

This isn't gonna have lots spent on it, it's gonna be used and abused mostly and is just generally a bit of fun and to gain a bit of experience. I also haven't done any real work on cars in over a year and loved stripping it yesterday despite the many cuts and bruises I now have.

Anyway, the car in question:

https://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b112/GrahamVFR/CorsaXE/corsa.jpg

Not perfect but serves the purpose we want. Had a slight front ender at somepoint so will need a couple of bits to sort that, but no big deal.

These are old photos from when we stripped it but I thought I'd put them in anyway.

https://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b112/GrahamVFR/CorsaXE/corsa2.jpg

Sunroof which is annoying, but perspex will be put in to cover that.

https://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b112/GrahamVFR/CorsaXE/corsa3.jpg

All that weight!

https://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b112/GrahamVFR/CorsaXE/corsa4.jpg

And now back to yesterday, when I towed it to where we'll be working on it.

https://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b112/GrahamVFR/CorsaXE/corsa5.jpg

1.2 8v lump.

https://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b112/GrahamVFR/CorsaXE/corsa6.jpg

https://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b112/GrahamVFR/CorsaXE/corsa7.jpg

Still got to get all the sounds out and dash will be removed to make things easier to access.

https://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b112/GrahamVFR/CorsaXE/corsa8.jpg

Exhaust removal, I kept getting rust in the face, not very nice.

https://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b112/GrahamVFR/CorsaXE/corsa9.jpg

https://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b112/GrahamVFR/CorsaXE/corsa10.jpg

How it's left.

https://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b112/GrahamVFR/CorsaXE/corsa11.jpg

Just a few pipes to remove and it's ready. Driveshafts, linkage, exhaust all removed so the harder bits are out the way. Just need some bodies to help lift the car over the engine when we drop it as we don't have a crane yet.

Anyway, I'm sure more updates will come soon I hope, quite looking forwards to doing this!

Why is it called a "redtop" Corsa?

The clue is within the title... XE = C20XE (NA), the turbo is LET (C20LET).

Not sure what the alloys are. A few people have guessed at 'old Speedlines' but no proof of that and can't find them anywhere on the internet. You wouldn't believe how many people message me about them on various forums!

Awesome dude, I thought it was CX20 E for NA and LET for Turbo, learn something new everyday Thumbs Up

They're compomotives by the looks of it.

Cool project. Shouldn't take you long Thumbs Up

No they aren't compomotive's, they afaik have the name embossed into the face of the wheel.

They do resemble old speedlines but I can't be sure and can't find anything to prove they are Laughing

Luke, whats made you decide on the XE rather than the LET?

Probably cost. A running XE is typically ~£400, a decent LET will still set you back the thick end of £1k. That and a LET requires more fettling to fit. An XE conversion, providing you have all the parts, can be done in a day.

I've been in and driven a few converted Novas, while they are emence fun, I can't say I'd want one these days, they just do not go round corners fast enough.

Good luck, you'll enjoy the end product! Thumbs Up

edit: I doubt they are Speelines either, IIRC they also stamped their name on the wheel.

Redtop refers to the spark plug cover on the engine that is going in. 99.9% of the engine used had a red one from factory, hence "red top"

Been a long time since I played with nova/corsa conversions.

Which gearbox you going for? F28 with the 2wd conversion or F20 or some other?

F20 I reckon. Still has top end. Whilst the F16 is better for acceleration some tracks have long straights and would be annoying to be topping out at just over a ton with other cars flying past you effortlessly.

Have fun insuring it, i'm sure all the brokers will be queueing up for your massive premiums. Laughing

Was going to suggest that a Corsa isn't perhaps the best choice(even with an engine conversion), and you could probably get a better (already track prepped) car for very little - for example a place near me had a Mk3 Goof gti, stripped out, with roll cage and seats for £1200. Personally, i'd be tempted by something like a Pug 205 Gti - lots still around for relatively cheaply, go fairly well and handle decently.

Then, i actually read the thread properly, and discovered the car was an old shitter you had knocking around anyway and got the engine for 'cheap'.
Good luck, hope it all goes well.

Thumbs Up

Eh? I'm 21 with 1 NCB and no claims... It's only like insuring a 2.0 Cavalier.

Have you actually checked this, as many/most insurance companies load the premiums for any modifications (especially fast road/race) - you may find you have to go with a specialist.

Most insurers should be able to sort something out. People have been chucking XEs into Nova's for ~10years now. The usual way they set the premium is to take the details of the car the engine came from, IIRC the Cav used to be the cheapest details.

21 and 1 year NCB is still 'n00b' territory for insurers so I wouldn't be so certain on it being cheap.

One of the worst modifications for scaring insurers is a roll cage!

Would love a sleeper car like this.

A mate of mine is selling his Clio. It's a bog standard 1.2 shell. Standard paint, Like a mellow yellow colour.
The only give away are the Williams alloys. They are only fitted so he could run the big brakes and rear disks.

Under the hood is a 2.0L F16 Williams engine RR'd at 150bhp.

He only wants £800 for it. I though that was pretty good.

Oh, my sides.

Any modifications sir?
Well, a bigger engine fitted.
How much bigger?
Twice the size of the previous one.
Click. Brrrrrrrr.

Far from it.

I used to run a 1600 nova with twin 40s and a lumpy cam. By all accounts, it went like hell for an 8v shopping trolley. Last year I had it, I was told by more than one insurer they would rather cover me on a GTS-Turbo Skyline than the vauxhall. I'd imagine your Corsa will be a similar situation

That could well be because there are some grown-ups on BCF who actually think about these things.
