What is the formula for expressing one number as a percentage of another?

e.g. What percentage of 23 is 16.5? a nice simple formula would be good I have about a dozen of these to work out and I have forgotten my GCSE Maths from 30 years ago. Not that I was any good to start with. 5 goes to get a Grade 1, sigh.

16.5 divided by 23 = 0.717
Then multiply 0.717 by 100 to get your percentage.

So 16.5 is 71.7% of 23.

Not sure it's the simpliest way but I'd do it like so:

=16.5/(23/100)

You want


(x/y)*100=%


X is the number whose percentage of Y you are trying to find. It works both ways.


So (15/20)*100 = 15 is 75% of 20.

And (20/15)*100 = 20 is 133% of 15.

Its a little long winded, but obvs if only simple formulas, you can copy paste etc


=sum((E17*D14)*100)/10000)


^everythng after =sum can be interchanged, as long as the correct bracketry is there.


Thats the schoolboy version tbh, you can simply put =+ also, does the same thing.


Should be able to find a guide on Excel formulae with Google.

100 + 17.5% = 117.5
100 + 15% = 115 (this is VAT lowered by 2.5%)


117.5-115 = 2.5 (difference between them)

2.5/117.5 = 0.021 x=2.1% price reduction.
