Right i work nights 7pm - 7am and i do nothing from 12-7am - it was all cool till yesterday when we all got sent an email - a scare tactic i assume - that no personal use of the internet is allowed, my manager doesnt have a problem, but he was obviously highlighted if abused this can lead to disciplinary action

Im not too bothered about using the web because i can do that whenever - i doubt these people even have the intelligence to set up a proxy gateway to filter everything - anyways i noticed yesterday that i have the MSN application installed to my computer, because this is an application etc i was wondering is i could use that ( i was using e buddy which was obviously making me search via web pages to get to it and they can see that ive searched for it) - but i was thinking because its an application whether it by passes the whole filtration system? or will they know ive been on msn for 12 hours?
Sorry if this sounds dim and i probably shouldnt be using the web to save myself and get in trouble but 48 hours in 4 days is a lot of free time to spend twiddling your thumbs

The filter/monitor your company is using is most likely set up on their internet gateway (at least thats my understanding of how these things work) therefore any traffic from your machine to the internet would be logged. Sad

It's very unlikely that you will be able to hide your browsing habits. If they are doing it properly than all of your net traffic will be going through a single point which will be where the monitoring takes place.

Chances are, as long as you arn't sat on Facebook for your entire shift, or trying to install P2P software, no one will look at what you are up to. No one wants to sit and sift through logs all day.

Most companies in recent months have had to remind their staff that being at work means that they actually have to do something other than sit on social notworking sites all day.

MSN will be automatically included as a kind of tick box in the set up of whatever proxy blocking configuration they have going there.

If it works, then I doubt they will notice you are using it tbh. If you want to keep your job, then don't use it! You are still getting paid. Read a book or something.

Can't go wrong with Discworld (well maybe with The Colour of Magic and The Light Fantastic, but the others are all gold) I recommend Small Gods, fantastic book.

Depends if your company has the ability to visually record everything that you are doing on the computer, and if someone in management sees it then you're screwed. They can replay it back and watch what you were doing during your shift.

hmmn, no. If they can log network activity between your machines IP and the internet during your shift i think that would give them enough to take action on.

Although as someone already mentioned its unlikely that they actually have anyone willing to wade through hours of logs and see who is doing what, although its probably best not to risk it in your case.

My work run a report every month of the top 20 websites visited by the entire company and the top 20 blocked sites that people have tried to look at. If your username gets flagged too many times then you get your arse kicked. No-ones been sacked yet but its caught out a few people, written warnings etc.

I can't take credit at all for this but whenever anyone whinges about being bored at work and that they have nothing better to do, I point them at this.

CAUTION: Link itself is safe for work (little bit of swearing though), but the main site is not.

https://www.b3ta.com/questions/workboredom/post343454

It's inspired me to spend any free time I get at work making things better for myself and others. Along the way I'm learning many new things and getting myself better qualified for my next job.

For what it's worth, I'm an IT spod and if they've set it up correctly you had better pull your socks up. With the current set of enterprise net filtering software, it's not a big job at all to monitor and check the internet usage of several hundred users.

Where I am, had MSN installed one day I started getting messages saying that they where monitoring convosations and that we should not be using this. I moved on to Web messenger then.

Where I am they have blocked the sites they don't want us on. Facebook myspace and youtube.com (not .co.uk mind!.

Take your DS in and play that, or get one of those USB dongle internet things and take a laptop in.

I'd give it a few weeks and see if anyone gets done for it, someone else is bound to ignore the warnings.

Yeah thanks for all the useful replys, i have my DS and today i was actually busy, apparently some guy was caught last week and he got a months probation (he also fell asleep at the desk) then again im by far the best operator so they would be gutted to lose me!
im just going to start reading and learning more about engineering

this thread has defo given me some ideas! in fact because i was so bored i managed to make a useful document for the whole of the company which im going to present in my next meeting ..

this however does mean i can no longer look up image chan or other dubious sites which involve taboo stuff haha and no longer have msn conversations that require me to have a "gentlemans wash" and see some bird in my lunch break haha
Excellent

You know that Jehova Witnesses DO NOT believe in sex before marriage, except I know of one that broke that rule and paid for it by being barred from going to their future meetings - it was his ex that told them as she had to come clean with all her sins before converting! Smile

I guess you'll have to marry her first!

Hmm... You could just use ebuddy and set up your own web proxy. On your website, which requires a username and password (a basic php login form) to access and everything sent back and forth is encrypted with SSL.

I suppose then, you still may have to explain what the website is etcetera. And this is probably a little more effort than you want to put in. Resulting in them blocking it anyway Razz

Maybe I am talking purely theoretically!
