Double click the little speaker icon in the bottom right corner. Make sure they are all up like wave etc.

Ok.

Click start, settings, control panel.

Sounds and audio devices. Click the advanced button in the middle. Make sure they are all up. If they are, check the other various tabs etc

Go to the hardware tab in that sounds and devices thing. List out what it says in there and are they all working correctly? It will tell you on each one underneath.

When you re-installed XP did you reload the motherboard chipset driver along with the sound driver, etc, for your DEll system ???

Here's the link to the latest drivers;

That means that your drivers for the device aren't installed (or not installed properly?)

A quick google search came up with this driver for 'Microsoft WINMM WDM Audio Compatibility '. Just download it and install it.

I have no idea if this driver issue is directly related to your problem, but it's worth a shot, and worth installing anyway.

Have you got Service pack 3 installed? If not, get it and install it, that will include the HD audio hotfixes needed.

After that, get the driver with this following link

https://support.euro.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=uk&l=en&s=gen&releaseid=R114282&SystemID=DIMENSION%205100&servicetag=&os=WW1&osl=en&deviceid=8907&devlib=0&typecnt=0&vercnt=2&catid=-1&impid=-1&formatcnt=1&libid=3&fileid=150155

That should see you sorted out Thumbs Up
