Yesterday, they phoned me on my mobile:

"Hi, we noticed you had opened up a new cash isa recently and had put in X amount."

"Yes, that's correct."

"Well, I'm just phoning today to see if I can help you transfer some more money into it, as we know all our customers don't have access to online banking."

Neutral The cheek. They're desperate for cash.

Most banks will do that. None are fans of people being constantly O/D. They can tell you to pay it back at any point. They will also bounce payments going out if you go out of the buffer zone that is a overdraft too.

At what point would you like them to keep going past your overdraft?

You didn't go over by 1p, did you? Wink

If you really do feel you have been screwed then write and complain and demand your charges back as by applying them for going over by 1p is out of order. I am sure they can apply reason if that really is the case.

Barclays would always apply a charge instantly, which seemed reasonable.

What didn't seem reasonable is that many other banks would wait a while, then apply the charge(s), meaning that unless you're really good at keeping track of it all (which at a guess, the people getting them aren't), you can very easily go overdrawn again, which, oddly enough makes it all rather self-perpetuating.)
I suspect the banks /do/ rather like people being in this situation Rolling Eyes.

Dealing with money is always going to be stressful when it's a case of not enough money, but.........

......biting your lip and being polite on the telephone when you've made a mistake and run out tends to be the best way forward. If the O/D has been exceeded it's a computer that rejects the payment as that's the way it works. I've made a couple of mistakes forgetting about cheques and DD's and found that if I 'phoned them and said I was really sorry and it was obvious to them that it was a timing issue they've always returned the charges to me with a 'try not to do it again' speech. The one that always caught me out was having cleared funds in the day before, not on the day.

It's a relationship at the end of the day and you have to work it to your advantage, as difficult as that seems, it's the only way. The person you speak to often has the ability to play by the rules or be pleasant and revoke the charges as a one off favour. If you're grumpy and nasty to them they're only human and it's not going to go your way - your mistake, eat humble pie. You have to be in a position of strength to rant and win!

The bottom line is this;

All the banks are toss. I keep all my money under a rock in my garden.

Which bank are you with?

Gone are the days of the "relationship" dealing with a bank manager face to face for serious issues, one who knows who you are and can apply common sense etc. Not that I was ever using banks when it was like this.

Its like any big faceless corporation and customer service is a not a priority.

Halifax and I find them to be ok, albeit they are a Bank and therefore a faceless corporation, I agree. Thing is I do most stuff online and can make sure I stay in the black, however, I balls up every now and again and have to 'phone them. When I do contact them it's because I've made a mistake and they're gonna charge me shed loads as a result.

Bottom line I don't want to have to pay the charges - I know it was my mistake, so I'm really nice to them, and hey presto my charges are reimbursed/not taken. If I was cr@ppy with them it would be 'sorry, but your mistake' and I'm out of pocket. Personally, I can afford to be nice in a phone call if it saves me £25 in the process.

I'd love to keep my money elsewhere, but I have to have a bank account to function - wages, DD's, SO's etc. cash used to be King, but no longer, so I keep as close as I can to cash principles within the realms of what's possible in 2009.

Well I think it all depends on your local branch. Mine is very small and run by old ladys. I must of had £300+ of charges refunded just by going in and saying sorry I was ill so couldnt get down to pay money in etc etc.

Happily I now manage my finances alot better and having a job really helps. Laughing

The results of the OFT test case should be concluded this year, with the OFT already successful so far against the banks.
Credit cards should also be currently no more than £12 fee's.

My case I had against Natwest (which I won) was because they wouldn't pay a £20 direct debit and so of course I incurred a fee of £30 (at the time). Won't pay 20 for you but expect you to pay 30.
Because it was a period of unemployment it just snowballed out of control and ended up being well over £1500 in mostly fees.
By the time I took them to court I had sorted the account out, so the money I got back was given to me as a cheque.

The ladies in the Fleetwood branch of Natwest have also been exceptionally good to me whenever I've needed to have contact with them. To the extent of making me cups of tea while I wait.

First time I went in I was in uniform and the manager's son is also a sailor. Spent a good half hour chatting before we even mentioned banking business.

Hats off to them.

There's a certain method to dealing with them. With First Direct years ago I had one payment that took me over my limit, and as said already, they wait a month before applying the charge. Which took me over the limit next month. And the next. And the next. Effectively, I'm paying an extra £25 a month because I went over my limit once.

After about 6 months of this I called them and asked if they could delay the charge by 2 days (charge went out on 21st, I got paid 23rd) so I could break the cycle. They said they couldn't so I instead asked to cancel all my DD's, because I couldn't afford their charges and I'd have to move to another bank. They put me through to customer care, who looked at the account, saw that it was always their charge that took me overdrawn, and refunded all the charges except the original one. That seemed fair enough to me.

The fee schedules are quite clearly set to charge you as much as possible though. Overdraft fees are taken out a month later, so they have a chance to take you overdrawn again and incur another charge. Refused DD charges are taken immediately - i.e. we already know you have no money, so let's see if this £40 charge is enough to take you overdrawn and let us charge you another £25 next month.

The problem is, because of the court case in progress now, banks won't even entertain any claims because they know there's nothing you can do. If you go to the ombudsman, they'll ask for it to be put on hold until the outcome of the case. If you try to go to court, they'll request that the court holds the case until the existing one has completed.

I fervently hope Sir Fred Goodwin gets smashed in as well. I'd like an hour alone with that vile cunt.

Abbey sucks as well. When i split with the wife i asked them to freeze the account but they wouldnt and allowed her to extend the overdraft take out the money and leave me to carry the can.

I then ran up 150 quid of charges and they wouldnt budge on any so i told them i can reduce my overdraft by 150 or pay you 150.
Can you guess what they went for Mad

Abbey dont want me back in the clear because i'm paying them XX amount each month in overdraft and interest charges. Once i'm back in credit they wont get money each month which adds up over a year to nearly 4000 !

Well as it must be a joint account you must have agreed to the O/D increase.... If not then you have them by the short and curlies....
Contact their customer relations dept, citing the date you asked for the acc to be frozen and the reason, then the date the O/D was increased and the fact you never agreed to it.
Ask for full refund of all charges due to them failing to act on your information and failure of them to check both parties agreement to a increase. They have to respond to all complaints and if not resolved in 12 weeks, you can then take this to the onwardsman. They will want to resolve it as any case going to the onwardsman, costs the bank.
