Is it possible to create a new partition on my PC, install xp fresh. Copy stuff from the old partition to the new one then delete the old one.

I don't want anything AT ALL to be left on my pc afterwards apart from the stuff in my documents.

Will xp be nice a quick like it was when I first installed it?

You could rename your Windows, etc, to old.windows , etc, as an alternative to Norton's partition magic.

Depending on what base Windows XP you have with the latest update pack version 1,2 or 3, but if you've got pack 1 or 2 then expect to spend an hour or so depending on your broadband download speed?

Once completed, carry over any old files from the old directory to the new one and delete the old directory.

Defrag hard drive after all this..

Thats what I did last time and it failed. I just want to do a fresh install. If I create a new partition, then delete the old one afterwards, is that ok? Will there be registry crap and other stuff left over or are partition completely separate?

Do I need to use partition magic to get the old files to the new partition or can I browse to it?

Cheers Karma

Partition is seperate and hopefully your copy of Windows XP is bootable, and once you've created a bootable primary partition with partition magic, then boot-up pc with the XP disk in drive and do the usual install windows but install it to the new partition and make it your primary partition, otherwise use 'F8' when booting up to choose the correct partition.

Once done and XP is installed carry over your files from the old partition, use partition magic to delete the old partition once done defrag hdd

You can browse the old partition

No, the new partition will be automatically designated by the current windows as drive 'D'. You can browse it normally.

Once you've deleted the old partition, then that space will become available to resize your current primary partition on the hdd to full size using the norton's partition magic without losing any data.

That's why Windows vista itself is good because you can add/delete/resize partitions without the need for any other software needed.

You would be better off moving all of your files onto an external hard drive/spare hard drive and then simply installing Windows on top of you current installation.

Depends if he has one, or wants to go the expense of buying one? See what happens?

Hi,

I advise you use a nice liveCD like Gparted. Download it, burn the ISO to disk, and then BOOT.

It is possible, depending on how much freespace you have and how big your hard-drive is.

1) Boot GPARTED
2)Just resize the MAIN partition
3) Make a new partition from the free-space
4) Copy all files to the new partition
5) Delete old partition
6) Resize the partition made on step 3 to use ALL the disk-space

But as I said, it all depends on how much files you have and how big your hdd is.
