Sorry for the grainy pics I haven't got to grips with the new camera and it was late. Here's my 'busa engine ready to go in the bike. All of the work is my own design & build-up (except the actual welding).

Turbo unit is a GT30R (hi-jacked on the way to a Skyline) and the big shiny box on top is 6-core laminova watercooled intercooler I made. The intercooler is a one-of and there's only one other bike with those type of cores fitted that I know of and it only uses two cores.

I'll let you know next week when it's been on the dyno. Should make 500hp.

I don't care how much it puts out.*
I don't care what it looks like.*

But fuck me that 'exhaust' is inspirational! Screw swine flu, THAT will be the apocolypse.

* I do actually, im well interested in the engineering behind customised bikes but it wouldnt of had the same ring to it Very Happy

I take it you have a seperate radiator for the charge cooler on the bike? Or is it for drag runs and you just use a tank or something?

Yes it has two radiators. I cut a stock 'busa radiator in half and bent it to fit inside the main one. An electric waterpump circulates the coolant for the charge cooler system.

The intercooler workings:

If it don't blow up on the dyno it'll be out next weekend Paul.

I am going to do a more thorough thread on it on UKB where the membership will have more interest in the finer detail. Right now I'm concentrating on getting the thing fit to run.

Was looking at making a similar setup for my car with an electric caravan pump, i guess you probably bought a decent pump.

Took me a while to figure out how the flow goes through your cooler. Looks like a good design, loads of surface area, maybe too much? The fins look very closely packed, is there enough gaps to allow low pressure drop?

Why do the tubes have an inner core and an outer one with loads of square holes? Which one is the water flowing in?

Looking good Thumbs Up

The guy who welded the round welds is very talented. He welded the 1mm-wall-thickness pure aluminium cores to 6mm aluminium alloy plate. I got an email from the Laminova R&D guy who said it would be 'very, very difficult' so I gave him some off-cuts to practice with.

The outer-case welds are not so tidy and were done be someone else as this guy wasn't available.

Dear sweet holy feck, you're officially my hero.
I'd love to do something like that, but unfortunately lack the time and expertise. Working on the expertise bit, though. Slowly.

I wish there was a 'this is 100% of awesome' karma button...

Thanks for the support guys - there's a lot of money in this for me if it goes bang on the dyno - pistons & rods are about £1200 alone.

You're my kind of guy Very Happy

The centre core is plugged (I drilled small holes in my plugs to have a small flow through and stop the core from 'storing' heat in the centre) and the coolant flows through the ring of small holes. I've set it out so the water flows up three cores then back down the other three, this is to balance temperatures across the cylinders - if all the cores flowed the same way one side of the engine would get hotter intake than the other. The pump is a Johnson magnetic drive pump - about a hundred quids worth I think.

The fins are very close - 0.2mm thick and 0.3mm apart. The 6 cores provide twice the volume of the up-pipe so even with the very large surface area there's a lot of volume. I have temp sensors fitted already and I'm going to tap both sides into MAP sensors to measure the drop. I imagine it will be quite a bit at full boost, (which should be around 30psi). I'm guessing 5-8psi drop, but that will be offset by the charge density increase from the temperature drop hopefully. Initial testing (with no logging data) shows it's good for 405hp @1.2bar of boost so unless it saturates and starts backing-up it will be good. The Laminova guy said 6 cores would 'work very well' so I'm quite happy with it. You can find info on the cores here:

It's enough for 250mph, though the hard bit is getting the power to the floor.
