what variety were they? My Naga Moresh have become a little depleated as I have given some plants to Bengali students as presents for their moms to remind them of Bangladesh.

The two big ones are (I think) Jalapeno. The smaller ones are (I think) Hungarian.

They were a joke gift in one of those "grow your own chillis" boxes. I planted them at totally the wrong time of year (autumn) but the gauntlet had been laid down.

Those five are the survivors of the ten or so that germinated.

They grow like triffids. The bigger ones have about ten flowers each on the verge of opening with lots of buds in reserve.

Just need to remember to keep watering them.

Just something from seeing ariels ones there. He clearly has them in a good quality potting compost. Looks home mixed?

Don't pot them into cheap compost. I did with mine and it nearly killed them all off.

Leaves started going yellow and the plants were generally sad after I potted them up (they were getting root bound, I was expecting a burst of growth). I dimly recalled from my biology days that a plant going yellow with sufficient heat, light and water is short of nitrogen. A couple of weeks intense nitrogen feeding saw half of them dead and the others back to green again.

Conclusion: There are almost no nutrients in the cheap compost I put them in.

If you want a good brand of potting compost, John Innes numbers 1 and 2 are about as good as you'll get.

I cut the compost about 20% with vermiculite to aid drainage and aeration of the roots and they get a weekly NPK (nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium) feed from a diluted tomato liquid mix.

My Grandad always used to swear by pearlite in his potting compost rather than vermiculite. It's more porus while keeping its structure better. As such, it keeps the soil texture open while trapping moisture and releasing it in a sustained manner.

I remember earning pocket money by mixing compost for him in a big barrel thing on a swivel. He knew his stuff, he used to be the head gardner at the BBCs Beechgrove Garden in Aberdeen, although he never appeared on TV.

I used the tip of my little finger because they are inside and not many insects about. Swapped pollen between the two plants although the first couple of flowers were done by the time the others opened so we'll see how they go.
