Hi All
on my trip to Switzerland in a few weeks I would like to take a camera to mount to the bike to get some riding footage.
However I am stuck as to which camera to get.
I am seeing good things about the gopro camera's...
https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Motorsports-Hero-Wide-5-Camera-GoPro-Go-Pro_W0QQitemZ350189395118QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CamerasPhoto_DigitalCameras_DigitalCameras_JN?hash=item350189395118&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1683%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318%7C301%3A1%7C293%3A1%7C294%3A50
However they are pretty expensive for something that I'm really not going to use that much.
So I am thinking of getting a cheap miniDV camera like.....
https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Samsung-VPD361-Brand-New-Digital-Camcorder_W0QQitemZ200337704232QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_AudioTVElectronics_Video_Camcorders?hash=item200337704232&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1690%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318%7C301%3A1%7C293%3A1%7C294%3A50
The only problem I can see from the latter option is the tape may suffer from vibrations? (and of course the size)
can anyone shed some light/experience on both options? ____________________ Current - Hornet 600, Transalp 650, X140 Pit, GPZ400R

Just tape a mobile to your face and off you go .
On a more serious note, I really like the quality of the go pro camera and as far as I know it comes with everything you need to mount it to your bike properly. Meanwhile mounting a normal handheld camera to a bike's going to be a bit more difficult. |

That looks like just what I want, doesn't really show very well how it'd attach to the helmet?
Anyone got info on that? ____________________ TheShaggyDA: I've got 3 or 4 pairs that predate my wife, so at least 11.5 years old. |

Its a mounting thing attached with 3m sticky stuff, strong as shit can't pull it off.
The motor sport also comes with a suction cup for the fairings, tank, any where on a car.
I'll grab pics now. ____________________ ◙◙► K6 GSXR 600 ◄◙◙◙◙► K5 GSXR 1000 ◄◙◙◙◙► K5 GSXR 600 ◄◙◙◙◙► 96 RF600r ◄◙◙

Failing that, which will, admittedly, give some awesome perspective shots, I found that a Kodak Zi6 (available from 7dayshop.com for less than £100) does a pretty good 720p resolution, doesn't make me panic about theft, and fits nicely to a RAM mount on the handlebars. It also takes large SD cards (I've got an 8GB in mine, but it'll do 16GB), and if you put in those energizer lithium batteries, it lasts for eternity.
It's a little bigger than an old iPod, so it's not huge. ____________________ '10 SV650SF, '83 GS650GT (it lives!), Questionable DIY dash project, 3D Printer project, Lasercutter project |

Thanks for the info guys !
Can anyone give a comparison of the gopro wide verses the standard lense? (in terms of video output)
McGee, looks like you have the wide angle version, correct?
Does it make scenes distorted or do you get any issues with sunlight causing glare on the image like...
https://www.okroads.com/121503/i4flati75.JPG
I can understand it will do that with any lens if direct into the sun but I imagine with wide angle lens it could be more problematic.
Diagram below may explain this better....
https://bikechatforums.com/files/wide_vs_standard.jpg
So there is direct sunlight hitting the side of the lense which may cause glare?
The only thing that draws me strongly to the gopro is the mounting ease. ie I can stick the mounts left, right, front, rear and my helmet and swap the camera as and when required. ____________________ Current - Hornet 600, Transalp 650, X140 Pit, GPZ400R

It is indeed the wide, the motorsport version should be the 5mp wide version.
In my experience it doesn't get a lot of glare and if you look directly at the sun it just shows up a bit of glare and a black dot (40 odd seconds in the link at the bottom).
I don't have any of my videos uploaded as of yet, but they come out like this:
Clicky
But no more glare than normal.
Also if you do get it make sure to set the record volume to low as it reduces all the annoying knocks and rattle noises for a bike. ____________________ ◙◙► K6 GSXR 600 ◄◙◙◙◙► K5 GSXR 1000 ◄◙◙◙◙► K5 GSXR 600 ◄◙◙◙◙► 96 RF600r ◄◙◙

Wow Thanks McGee
That was the only video I have seen that showed really decent quality. Even the previews on the gopro site are worse than that.
Were all camera's in that gopro?
thanks,

here's a quick clip from my gopro. Same as Mcgoos.
https://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k179/DENMONKEY/th_Movie_0002.jpg
These were just a couple of quick samples.
As you can see from the second clip it was a bit overcast and dark. It didn't like that too much.
The first is on the fairing, second is up front beside the screen and last is where Lees is.
You can also see in the last bit I was heading into the sun so might give you an idea.
One thing I have noticed with the WS version is if you want to do a ride behind you really need to be right on their ass otherwise they appear to be miles in front. ____________________ meh |

With regard to the sunlight and the gopro I've just seen this vid on Vimeo, which admittedly may be a bit bias because it's from gopro themselves, but it clearly shows that flaring may not be too much of a problem on the wide-angle lense. Not entirely sure what the dark spot in the middle of the sun is, but it's a bright enough day there regardless!
