Hi everyone, seeing as im 17 now ive decieded to sell the Gilera and go buy a car!

Ive looked at a few and are ready to purchase one. Now, i went over to East London today over at Rainham and they had a 2000 Fiat Punto for sale which i really liked..

However, one thing that made me think was the mileage of the car. The mileage is 120,000 Miles. Now im no expert but to ME that seems fairly high for a 1.2?

The car has had 3 owners and it in Petrol.
I may go along with it and buy it but id really apprecaite any comments on this before i do!

Thanks.

James

I'd be more concerned at the fact it is a Punto. They are truely awful cars.

My Golf had 125,000 on the clocks & ran like new, wouldn't let that put you off. But like above, i wouldn't go for a Punto.

I'd stear clear unless it is really cheap. It is a nine year old Punto with a relatively high mileage and I dare bet it was never designed to go much further without it starting to fall apart. It wouldn't surprise me if there were some big bills looming around the corner for that particular car.

Heresy, my 96 was a great little car.

Never had one problem and absolutely loved it, I owned a Calibra and an xr2i at the time as well (not bad for a 17 year old) and it was an awesome little car for a run around.

I'd steer clear from high mileage Fiat's!

My first car was a Peugeot 306 2ltr GLX diesel, bigger car and pretty fast but was dirt cheap to insure suprisingly! Had 80k miles on it when I bought it and I never had a single problem with it...

Just sold a high mileage Fiat Scudo van, whilst it was a great van that never let me down Im sensing it hasnt got much life left in it!

Ideally go for a golf if you can get a decent insurance quote.

Bluex5, you just have to realise it's more acceptable these days. Parents accept it and everything, hell you can't even make fun of it without being told it's bullying. I'd never get into it though, I like my arse hole in one piece! Laughing

I was unfortunate enough to own a Punto. Pure shite, let that one go.

There will always be plenty of cars about, just take it easy, find the best value for money you can and most importantly AVOID THE FUCKING FIAT.

My sister had a 2004 Punto with 40,000 miles on the clock. What a pile of shite!

Every time you started it a million faults would come up on the dash... these included ABS failure, Air bag failure, Hill-climber failure, ESP failure, Sidelight failure, engine failure and so on. It would cut out on cold days, would chugger along after it had just been started and it had an annoying problem of cutting out at junctions when it was sat for a while. It was becoming a danger for my sister to drive. There were many days that she would come home crying because it cut out on a roundabout and wouldn't start or she nearly caused a crash because it cut out at a junction, it just wasn't right.

We took it to 4 different garages, all said they couldn't find the route to any of the problems, even fiat themselves offered defeat. One garage said it might be this one problem and it would cost £1200 to fix but he wasn't 100% sure that would fix it.

And no it wasn't a bad earth connection, everything had been checked.

We offered defeat and sold it at a loss.
Never buy a Punto, ask any car garages. My uncle works for the AA and he warned us, yet we still bought it; we should have listened.

i dont know why but whenever i hear of someone just turning 17 wanting to buy a hatchback i just imagine a shitty banger getting stupidly huge rims, spoiler, massive sound system and giant bumper.

as said above the majority of punto drivers are tits (tits as in the person is a tit or the person has tits, moobs dont count)

for a first car i'd go for something japanese, the cars are generally quite reliable and as a first car its doubtful it will been taken care of properly.

i'd spend as little as possible on the first car, it will generally be shit due to high insurance so save up and buy something better when you hit 21/22 after a few years experiance.

also adding stuff to a car will not increase the value of the car.

Not having a go, more just an observation - When I was your age becoming a car driver was the social equivalent of becoming a child murderer. I don't think any of my circle of friends had a car licence untill they were over 20. We were all to busy spending every last coin we earnt on bikes we could barely afford to run. Gives weight to my theory that there are very few really hardcore enthusiasts getting into bikes anymore.

And don't buy anything Italian or French.

Do I count? 21 riding 4 years no car licence and I have 4 bikes.
