I tried to find out the answer to the above question. Every exchange site I visited came up with the same response:........... You're 'avin a laff aint cha? Laughing

It would seem that the pound (GBP) is worth approx. sweet f**k all (SFA) against the euro (E) and about the same against most of the world's other major currencies.

By the time those jokers, Brown, Darling and Mandleson have finished, the pound (GBP) will probably have reached parity with the Costa Rican coffee bean (CRCB) Crying or Very sad

It's not quite as bad as people are making out right now, it was in the 1.20 Euro to the Pound region for most of last year but come the winter it plummeted to where it hit 1 Euro for 1 Pound, it's now back up to 1.12 give or take a couple of cents and has been there for a while so it could be worse. You still can't say what it's going to be in July/August though, it may be down again or back up. Like you i'll be going whatever, just have to adjust my spending accordingly.

Buying currency before you go or using any old credit/debit card while out there rather than the two free ones (nationwide and post office) is the best way to waste money. As FreshAl points out, change currency over the counter now and you'll be getting 1.07 Euros to the pound whereas the VISA exchange rate would give you 1.11 at present so if you paid by card over there or withdrew from a foreign cashpoint using a card issuer that offers 0% commission you'll be wasting no money.

Nationwide recently altered it's VISA exchange rate fee, you now have to pay it for transactions outside europe, but everything is still free inside europe except for a couple of countries, Croatia is the only one I can remember that you'll have to pay the fee, it's 1% on all transactions.

Not great but the PIIGS will bring down the Euro soon enough (Portugal , Ireland , Italy , Greece , Spain) in that the only thing keeping the Euro afloat is the German economy which is in serious trouble also.

Mid summer around July / August it should have improved , when I say improved I mean Germany should have tanked more, as the PIIGS have had their economy credit ratings reduced to AA or A rating which is bad.

However this is not withstanding what the UK government may do ie they have so far printed out about 200bn of narrow money which is still considered bad by the markets. The second this money becomes broad money ie the government uses it to pay the bulls we go zimbabwe.

Snap, going down through france to misano wsb for 3 days then back up through switzerland, austria and germany.

We've been booking hotels on the net as they're cheaper but as for the rest looks like a pricey 10 days.

We're just estimating a pound per euro to be on the safe side.
Suppose the fuel will be the cheapest thing.

This is all getting rather infuriatig, as the organisation in SA want me to pay in Euros.

1400 per month.

Was 800 quid a month when I accepted, now look at 1300. So an extra grand I have to save for 2 months, thanks to Gordo.

But if your out of major cities, and eat from supermarkets etc you will be fine. Fuel was just as expensive as here sadly

If you buy it forward and take the risk, you can get slightly better rates. Weigh it up, check the graphs on XE and decide for yourself. I normally cut my losses and buy half as soon as I book my flights via this website...

https://www.crowncurrencyexchange.com/

...and buy the rest the week before departure.

Euro is going down, has been fairly consistently recently, at 1.14 to the pound now, only 4 weeks for my trip, might just be lucky.. US Dollar is nearly $1.60 to pound aswell.

I'm just going to wait, and hope, I don't want to carry a lot of cash so will do it all by nationwide card while i'm over, can use cashpoints to keep a couple of hundred on me.

18th June i'm off, heading straight for Grenoble where i'm going to follow the Alps through to Austria before going into the eastern countries, Romania, Bulgaria etc. Route will be made up on a day to day basis so nothing is fixed, will just go where I want and have the time to, got 16days. You?
