Supporting the front end whilst forks are off

Stupid question perhaps, but whats the most secure means of supporting the bike's front end, allowing me to remove the forks for a service?
Any ingenious home made solution? Or will a trolley jack and block of wood do the trick?

I should add I dont want to spend £50 - £70 on a stand that supports the headstock, so looking for a cheap and secure method.

I use a rear paddock stand and a trolley jack and wood under the downpipes,

You can always put rope around the front headstock and tie it to roof beams if they are strong enough , if they look a tad weedy you can spread the weight using planks over the roof beams.

Or you can just turn the footpegs upside down and put big wooden boxes under them.

I use two axle stands on my bandit, but that has an under slung frame.

Ratchet straps of the yokes onto rafters in the garrage. ( how i did the t595 )

or block of wood and trolley jack under the exhaust , then some wood proping it up (how i did the zxr400)

are the exhaust headers really strong enough to support the bike? I would have imagined they'd deform (or snap if rusty)

The frame goes under the engine on my bike so it's just a case of putting it on axle stands.

On mine I put a house brick under the sidestand, trolley jack with bit of wood under the engine, and a piece of timber padded at one end that goes between the garage wall and the back end of the bike (to force it against the sidestand).

A single piece of wood propped under the front right part of the engine.

1) Squat facing the bike level with the headstock on the right hand side with the bike on the sidestand..

2) Turn the bars to full right lock.

3) Push up and away from you on the end of the right bar, the front wheel will come up off the ground.

4) Slide a chock of some sort between the underside of the engine and the ground and let the weight back onto it.

This works fine. I've actually removed BOTH wheels at the same time from a bike in this manner by placing a chock under the swingarm in a similar manner. It's as secure as parking it on the sidestand is, 3 points of contact with the ground.

If the bike has a main stand, put a bag of sand on the rear rack or fill your throwovers with stones. As soon as you remove the front wheel, it'll pivot back to rest on the rear wheel.

Axel stands under crash bungs if you have them fitted and they are secured to something solid.

Works on a hornet.
