So, what car would you buy with a £1000, doesn't have to be a run around just a car you like for under a grand?

Contemplating getting something to drive me around until i can afford something half decent in a couple of months.

Id have to say a early 90s 3 series or a MK3 GTI (insurance is a bugger tho)

You think along my lines, consider a MkII, I went down that route, it was very impressive as a car, drove smooth and without problems, and it was an '86 model.

We've got an original shaped Rav 4 out here and its a nice little care to have albeit the boot is small when the seats aren't folded down. Its got the oomph of a gruff 2 litre engine and the durability of a soft roader.

Not bad for a hair dressers car.

Prices out here are a little expensive here but should be within or just over that price bracket in the UK

Not bad for a 14 year old car with no rust, no dings or dents...well until the wife reversed into a bollard!

Rav4 are nice but a bit small (on the outside for me, saying that i really wouldn't mind a Cherokee but fuel costs are a big factor as well.

Sadly anything with 'GTI' on the back means over £900 insurance. Sad

Then get a shitty 80's hatchback that will only last a few months.

You can find fiesta's on pistonheads for a hundred quid with tax and test.

It wouldn't be fast and fun but it would do.

Old'er' but not proper old mondeo's are going for like £500. Guy up my streets not long sold his V6 and my dad's not long sold his 2ltr for about the same. Pretty nippy decent cars for the money too.

Or you could be a real man and buy yourself a Landy. Cheap as chips to repair and so easy a chimp could do it.

High miles Saab 9-5

Rover 75

Volvo 850

Nissan Primera

Mazda 323f (personal reccomendation Thumbs Up )

It's just a lottery with cheapies, it's a numbers game, some you win, some you lose.

A bag of nails now, but when I was a yoof all I wanted was an Astra mkII GTE or even a Nova SRI. They still look quite good in my eyes even today a decade or so on.

Most were stolen by using items as simple as lollypop sticks though so they're probably quite tough to insure too. Laughing

Never mind the fact that they've all rotted to bits by now.

Thanks for all the input, i think if i do go for a cheap runaround, it'll be a lil 1.4 golf MK3. Insurance seems cheapest for this & i quite like the looks of them.

I'm in a similar boat, but I'm going to take up bangeromics. The nice expensive car is forming a chunk of a deposit on a mortgage, and I'm going to get a replacement for under £300.

Viable contenders are:

Any cavalier
Any early mondeo
Sierra if I'm lucky
Audi 80/90 with a lot of miles
Saab 900
Escort
assorted small hatchbacks.
Assorted dogs of larger cars (another scorpio tempts).

The car will have the minimum work to stay vaguely safe and roadworthy. Maintenance will expend to an oil change, seeing as I always have a drum of cheap oil, and plugs when the existing ones are worn away.

Once it fails the MOT a year later I can discard it and get another banger.

Man Scorpio Cosworth is still one of my favorite cars that I have driven.

Nice and lazy.

i got a renault megane coupe on an r plate for £400, just passed its 3rd mot in my ownership. I don't care if it falls to bits i've had my moneys worth.

I've also got a fiat brava on an s plate still goes sweet as a nut and just needed a new back box to pass its mot, i only paid £200 for the car.

so thats £600 on 2 cars with full mot's not bad for a frenchy and an italian with a combined 270,000 miles on em.

Talking of cheap cars is making me think on holding off on a bike for a while and just getting a cheap little car.

Insurance is so much less for me on cars than bikes.

I can insure skylines mr2's and all sorts of crap for 1/16th of a bike.

Therer is a guy two doors down from me selling a Nissan Primera SRi for £750. Not a bad car at all.

You'll pick up a Jaguar XJ6 for under a grand. Or a big fuck-off 7 series BMW, or even a Soyota Supra.

These are all old mans cars. People don't crash them so they aren't as expensive to insure as you'd think.

I think at this kind of price range you're better off just looking for 'a car' for not much money. If you look for specific makes and models you'll only end up paying over the odds.

Obviously there are some you should avoid, like anything from the pacific rim.

If I were to choose one specifically, my mates at work really know their MK2 Golf GTIs and they can be had for around £400-£500 and are dead easy to fix. I saw a BMW 530i touring on the trader last night for £999. with 60k on the clock. {EDIT} Sorry it was 85k but still, its under 100k which is good! {EDIT}

I was tempted until I discovered that it is a v8 and will absolutely guzzle fuel. Still, you can't go wrong for a practical estate though.

{EDIT} Clickeeeeee

My fiesta for 350 quid, 1.6 does about 35mpg, does 120mph, was sat for 4 years, all it took was a jump and off it went.

Done me well for 8 months, did an oil change and it's done me proud. Carried a cb125 in the back of it, and a cz125 recently, as well as many mopeds.

Bangernomics ftw.

A grand is roughly the budget I've been using for picking my next car.

Probably the best car I've seen for that sort of money is a mid to late 90s BMW Compact, such as this one which I drove and was up for sale at £995:

https://i349.photobucket.com/albums/q393/tarmacblog/Possible%20Cars/10032009456.jpg

At this price though I could also recommend mid to late 90s Honda Civics, early MX-5s (if you're very careful and do your research), and Alfa 145/146/155/156/GTVs (again, if you're very choosy and look for a cared-for example).

The BMW is probably the safest bet though in that price range.
