Ok, so the sun it out and my undies probably come off worse for wear when I'm stuck in leathers all day, I wouldn't have it any other way. My question is this...what's the deal with some guys wearing shorts and trainers on a motorbike, don't they like having skin, knees and ankles?

I didn't want to put this post on the Flames and Wars section, I'm not slagging off people who don't wear leathers every time they go out, what people do is their own business. I just don't get why anybody would take the risk!?!

But what I find really wierd is the fact that most of the time the shorts and trainers are teamed up with an top notch leather jacket, like somehow it'll save the day in the event of a crash!

Oh well, I feel much better after my rant....

Same reason folk take other risks I guess... because they can.

Frame on my bike gets really hot when the weather's baking... surely it's not that comfy in shorts. I've ridden around in combats enough times trying to keep my knees from contacting the hot metal. Confused

I know that feeling Bendy, the ZXR used to do it, was really bad if I got stuck in traffic, especillay when it had the over heating problem.

Last weekend I had someone on an R1 go past me wearing shorts and t-shirt, he wasn't exactly taking it easy either, very stupid.

I see folk on peds in normal clothes all the time, but to be fair they're in town and won't be getting over 40 at the very most - so not really any different to falling off a bicycle. Not saying it won't hurt, but you can see why they don't bother.

I fell off at about 20mph on a diesel-y roundabout 13 years ago and I've still got the scar on my knee today, and that was through jeans!
I guess it's just one of those things that until you've experience / known someone who experienced gravel rash you think you'll be OK!

Its all personal choice. I took a fair chunk of flesh off my knee when I crashed the VX, that was because I was wearing jeans.

However, I'll probably ride in jeans again when I can ride again. Bear in mind that I ride slow bikes slowly though. If I was riding a fast bike fast, then I'd probably wear some decent gear.

Textile, armoured jacket, jeans and motorbike boots I wear.

As robby said, all down to personal choice.

If I were doing some serious miles every day of the week I'd get some armoured textile trousers too.

I don't see why people get so excited by seeing other bikers in shorts etc on a sunny day. Occasionally I do it myself. So what??
I've had plenty of crashes to know how much it hurts, and it b****y hurts, but that's the risk you take.
Personally I'd like not to ride with a helmet at times, but the law says we can't and that's that. Nanny state UK. Brilliant. Evil or Very Mad

I've an armoured textile jacket, boots and some textile trousers with padding in. It's the minimum I'd wear to commute or go for a spin but I've ridden in jeans and trainers a few times dashing a couple of miles between our sites at work.

Does anyone else feel more confident wearing protective gear?

Yes, but it is false confidence as it is still easy to seriously injure yourself despite wearing decent gear.

All the best

If I had a cruiser I'd wear a t-shirt in summer. I don't leave the house expecting to crash Thumbs Up

As it is I wear a leather jacket, jeans and trainers most days. Don't see a problem myself - I don't ride like a spanner anymore and I generally realise I'm not fully protected, thus ride accordingly.

Cool

although I always wear the correct gloves / jacket / footwear, etc but my one flaw is trousers. In the summer sometimes I wear jeans nothing any less thick but still just jeans.

Unfortunatly large fat people like me have very little right to safety let alone comfortable or fassionable safety and I get sooo hot in summer the trousers I can wear.

One of the things in my list of ' as soon as I can fit them' is a pair of those safety jeans with the padding and knee pads in. Getting them in pink, however may take slightly longer Laughing

I have fully armoured, weatherproof jacket/trousers and gloves but no boots yet.
And mostly I just wear the jacket/gloves and some jeans, but any long haul rides I do, fully suited, and I will steal my Dads boots too Smile
And sometimes, if I am at work, and I want to quickly go and get something from the garage a bit down the road, I just put a fleece on and gloves. :<

There is no way I would undertake a journey in less than Cordura jacket and trousers. My normal riding gear at the moment is cordura waterproof trousers of the salopette type, and a leather jacket. I do have leather jeans too, but they are a tad small Embarassed

I ride in a textile jacket (armoured), jeans and trainers. Although leather trousers and boots will be bought soon...

But I will wear jeans for short journeys etc.

I had trowsers on and the road had just been resurfaced with stone chips Crying or Very sad

needless to say i only ever wear my leathers now, i had a propper jacket on but decided to keep the trousers on as its a short jurney to work

lost all the skin from me knee and all up my leg.... Sick

i'll dig up the old pictures of me leg.... allow others to prevent making the same mistake I did

Whats wrong with full leathers? They take a bit longer to put on but thats it. Leathers look good and if you crash you can still ride in them afterwards cos textiles seem to shred up fairly quickly.

Just an observation.

Twenty years ago almost no-one had leather jeans or one piece leathers unless you were a copper. The generally worn gear was leather jacket (or donkey jacket), jeans and Doc Martens/Parra boots. I still ride mostly wearing jeans, Doc Martens and a Cordura type jacket. Most of my mates started riding more recently when full leathers were de rigeur and they find it totally distracting to follow me along the road seeing my jeans "flapping in the wind".

How times change.

Hi

Same here. Leather were a novelty and more expensive then than they are now.

Go to France and you will see the coppers on the motorways wearing short sleeved shirts on the BMWs.

All the best

In my opinion. If you have gone out and spent hundreds of pounds on a set of leathers and then decide to wear jeans, all for the sake of 30 seconds to put them on, maybe 2 minutes if your not the youngest Wink. Your daft. It's a waste of money, and everyone knows how it can save your life.

Granted they don't make you invincible, but wouldn't you prefer to use the cows skin than your own?

I know I didn't pay £400 (and many others much more) to have them hanging up!
