Sorry that this is only tenuously related to 'bikes, but:

Sold a Kawasaki ZXR400 back wheel on the 'bay this week to a guy from, of all places, Australia.

Went to the Post Office with the wheel in a box to find out how much postage would be.

Got to the counter, put the package on the heavy scales and asked the girl behind the counter, "How much will this be to post to Australia, please?"

Her, with a thousand yard stare and a perfect deadpan, "It'll be expensive..."

Now if I were as quick and witty as I'd like to be, I'd have smiled, thanked her, picked up the package and left, but I'm not, so I didn't...

"How much will it be then?"

"£91.99 Standard service."

"How much for Priority service?"

Same deadpan delivery, "That'll cost more..."

Now I don't expect much from P.O. counter staff, but a factual answer rather than an abstract concept might be nice...

It's not just me, is it?

Unfortunately I think they tend to go with the "lowest common denominator" mentality, in that they treat everybody like the stupidest person that's ever been to their counter.

For reasons I won't go into, I had an Israeli turn up on my doorstep with the rear subframe of a BMW GS650 in a huge box. Turns out he'd ordered it, had it delivered to a local bike engineers and they had repaired his old frame and told him he didn't need it.

He wasn't local and asked me to show him where the post office was. We managed to get the box into the car and drove into town where I parked in the multi-storey and we carried this thing to the post office.

The post office said it was too big to post as a parcel. I pointed out that it had come by Parcelforce that very morning. They said Parcelforce was a different company and their rules were different.

I asked for the maximum sizes and could we measure it to make definitely sure before we dragged it away. This is how stupid they are. They told me the sizes and handed me a tape measure through the little window.

Under the gaze of many dribbling pensioners I got down and measured it without them seeing what size it really was and announced in a loud voice it was just inside the required size.

They only bloody took it without double checking.
