has any one ever taken a moped on a train
might sound like a dumb question but im thinking about doing it
there a moped at a breakers far far away for silly money so i dont want to pay out for it to be picked up by one of those motorocycle delivery peeps so i was thinking of taken it on a train
what would happen if i got a big enough box over a wooden crate
is there a limit of how biggest box you can take on a train

thanks

dude, just pay for the delivery... far less hassle than trying to put the fecker on a train.

Afraid its not that simple, you would need to contact the train company involved for specifics, however I would say it would need to be classed as freight.

How far away is it? Can you not just hire a van or pick up in a larger car?

Hi

You used to be able to do it but not sure you can anymore. When I moved from NI down to Hampshire I brought the H100 I had at the time down on the train. Rode from the ferry port to Lime Street station, bike onto the train and then down to Birmingham, change train and then down to Winchester.

However even then (1987) it was pretty unusual.

All the best

Keith

this far fetched idea might just be out the window

oh and i would have to get it delivered because a i cant drive and b if i did i dont have a van

I've asked before and was told no.

Apparently it's because of the well known phenomenon of mopeds spontaneously bursting into flames.

I got my chop on the train back from Liverpool. Didn't have to box it or anything, just sat with it to make sure it didn't go anywhere (I was in Liverpool, after all... Wink) and it was fairly cheap as I recall, but that was a good few years ago mind.

Why don't you call the train company and ask them?

I work for southern and can tell you that it wouldnt be allowed on one of our services. There are ways you can get around it, when i brought an engine home (bexhill at the time) from derby, I put it in bin liners.
Basically if you can disguise it and it's smell that people dont thinkk it's something like that then yes. But for something that size you'll have to pay a luggage charge as well. That's if they let you take something like that on a train.
In short, the overall costs and the hassle involved make it more viable to have it delivered by courier. Or like others have suggested, ride it home...

It's due to the fact you've got petrol in that moped i.e. highly combustible liquid which is far to dangerous for an enclosed train carriage !

This National Rail's view on it;

LUGGAGE & ANIMALS
Our advice and regulations on what you can and can't take on our trains.
Luggage
Customers may take up to three items of personal luggage free of charge, this includes two large items (such as suitcases or rucksacks) and one item of smaller hand luggage (such as a briefcase). Full details of the free allowances are available at stations.

Excess luggage and certain more bulky items (such as skis) may be carried, subject to available space, at an extra charge.

On Gatwick Express services bulky items such as skis are conveyed free in the luggage van. There is plenty of space on board for other luggage.

Articles and Animals not carried

Articles exceeding one metre in any dimension that cannot be carried by the passenger concerned. This includes canoes, hang-gliders, sail/surf boards. large furniture and any large musical instrument that cannot be carried without assistance.

Motorcycles, mopeds, motor scooters and motorised cycles.

Livestock e.g pigs. sheep and goats.

Any animal or article which, in the opinion of the train company staff, is causing or is likely to cause inconvenience to passengers due to its size or behaviour. On train staff are authorised to have items such as these removed from the train.

Accompanied animals and articles for which charges are payable

Each additional items of personal luggage above the free allowance

Each seat occupied by luggage, container or other articles when the seat is needed for passenger use

Each cat, dog or small animal exceeding the free allowance

Each article exceeding one metre in any dimension that can be carried by one person

Took my DT50 on a train from Kent to n Wales and back about 20 yrs ago. I just put it in the luggage van. I had to pay full-fare for it though.

Think slicing the drive belt in half with a knife would be sufficient enough for this... Wink

hi,
having worked in the rail industry for approx 15yrs. (in various capacities including staion inspector, conductor & driver)
i can categorically state anything with a petrol engine in it is NOT allowed anywhere on a train.
gone are the days when you could pay a childs fare or luggage ticket & stick it in the guards van.
you'd have to disguse it bloody good.
most companies operate a 6 or 9ft max size of luggage.
weight : talking about freight costs. (red star parcels have gone)
joining the aa/rac works, done that with a car i got for free.
owner reckoned it was fucked.
joined rac.
waited a couple of days & gave them a call, stating it wouldnt start.
all i wanted was a tow home.(i quite fancied the alloys for my own car)
he only got it started!
he took me a local motor-factors, i bought some new spark plugs & half an hour later the car was running great!
result = sold the car for £450 a week later!
cheers,
GAZ
