I have some standard bits of wire you'd find coming out of your psu (out of a now very dead pc)

1.what ampage is this cable? (what you'd have molex connectors going into then to your hdd or whatever)

2. can you get two pieces of cable and use them together (as in 2 wires where you'd have one both connected) so two 7amp cables = 14amps? or is that just silly?

It might be obvious but i don't want to have the cables burning out! but i'd like to make use of them Very Happy

1. dunno Confused Not much though, 2 amps max I would have though. I'm guessing really though.

2. yes 2 x 7 Amp rated cables doubled up would be the same as a single 14 Amp Thumbs Up

eeeexelent,
well, apparently an average HDD will use up to 40watts each, these would be off one cable, so thats at least 80w i have myself had 3hdds on one line so thats 120watt?
so how would i work out the ampage from that? its 12v the same as the bike so...

10 Amps Shocked

Power(P) = Volts (V) x Amps(I)

aaaaaaaaaaahhh! right! Very Happy

its been a while since gcse physics Razz

so it should be ok really...

these wires are being borrowed for part of the wireing on some new foglights i have got Twisted Evil seeing as i spend far too much time rideing at night down country lanes... they are 55w each and they reccomend 17amp cable and a 15amp fuse, these wires are going to be linking up the relay to the current highbeam (80w ish?).

Im still trying to find out the maximum load on the pc cables but not haveing allot of luck :/ (posted on a pc forum)

For 17A your looking at a 2.5mm squared cable.

I'm not entirely sure if thats what i have, the stuff i got off the roll from the spares shop said 17amp, its quite a bit thicker than the psu cable i have, but then it guess it depends on what type of metal is carrying the current, with auto cables, chunkyer the better, with a pc using chunky cables like that would use up allot of space (considering how many cables you have comeing out of the psu).
Unbelieveably nobody of the pc forum seems to know what rateing the cable is Sad

Well you can get tri rated cable as well. What gives cable it's rating is the size of conductor. But also the insulation type. For instance tri rated cable has insulation that can take a higher current (and therefor heat) So this would allow you to use a smaller conductor size to do the same job.

Sometimes, if your buying cable out of a car spares place, it is given a size in gauge. Like 12 gauge cable for instance. I'm not sure how this works Confused
