Ahh NMA...a good gig was a bloody gig
Now i've sobered up my choice and recommendation is a group that don't rehearse, don't sell records, don't write songs.
To hear them is to see them.
1st heard them on Peelys show, seen them quite a few times now.
The Bays https://www.thebays.com/
MP3s available... no hitch
Improvising is the way i make music, but these guys are on a different level.

I'm going through a definite folky phase right now, but the top 10 most played on my ipod runs something like this;
Kris Drever - posted this vid before, but it's worth another outing
Cara Dillon - simply stunning voice. Wife of Seth Lakeman's brother link
Martin Simpson - If you know him, you'll know what I'm on about Never Any Good
Woddie Guthrie - Dylan's inspiration, enough said (you've probably heard him even if you don't know the name)
John McCusker - probably the most prolific folk instrumentalist of recent times - even found time to write music for Billy Connolly's 'World Tour' series. Kinda hard to find him performing as 'himself', but this is good enough Link
Julie Fowlis - beautiful voice, sings in only in Gaelic which can be somewhat of an acquired taste! I love her though
Fleet Foxes - Proper American folk, getting some mainstream attention right now - worth checking out if you haven't already heard them (this vid from Vimeo is on my bookmark list and I have been boring people with it for a while now)
Then to complete the top 10 there's
Eagles of Death Metal - The other band (no longer a side project apparently) of Josh Homme (QOTSA) - definately worth a listen if you like that sort of thing link
Little Joy - side project from the Strokes' drummer Fab Moretti and his mates. They vary from a kinda skiffle version of the Strokes to a Loaded era Velvet Underground. Plus their singer is called Binki Shapiro - can only mean they are good! Skiffle Strokes, and Loaded style
and finally AC/DC - not sure I need a link for this one, but here goes anyway link
Am in the process of checking out some of the bands mentioned already in this thread - love these things, always a good way to find new music!
Cheers, Stu |

Actually that's not too bad!
Really enjoyed the first Mars Volta album so got tickets to go see them a few years back. They played a 90min set during which there were about 4 songs off the album - the rest of the time was just taken up with Cedric and Omar endlessly fret-wanking. I know I should have realised what I was letting myself in for, but hey. I've not really been able to listen to any of the subsequent Mars Volta albums due to this gig though... |
