As the title says really, been looking to get a new SLR for a while now for around the £400 mark? Any advice from the camera wizards?

Been doing some comparisons mainly focusing on the Nikons and Canons as they are tried and tested brilliant camera producers.

These two look good:

Here's where you can get it even cheaper plus and even add to your bundle and it still comes out cheaper so you get more for your money!

Hi

Do you have any camera equipment already? No point in buying a Nikon if you already have a load of Canon lenses (or the other way round).

For a good idea of the cheapest prices at the moment:-

(looks like Dixons with a discount code are about £40~£50 cheaper than Best Cameras)

All the best

I'd have that one, but if I couldn't afford it, I'd try this one:

I went for Canon as thats what most of my friends used thus it was easy to borrow lenses etc the mid range cams like the 450 are great cameras. Nikon and Canon have great back up and huge range of add ons. Sony offer some good slr's now as well. A friend of mine bought an alpha200 for £260 inc lens and it's pretty on the ball too but you will be stuck with sony only lenses is that is an issue later when it comes time to change the body. However for the money it's a damn good camera!

Dont forget to get a tripod and remote with whatever cam you go for!!!

The best thing you can do is go to a decent independent camera shop and try a Sony, Nikon and a Canon out and see which one works best for you.

In terms of image quality and lens choice there's very little between Canon and Nikon, Sony are also catching up now.

Most people in this thread saying definately get one or the other are just telling you get what they already have.

Thanks

Hi

Firstly I will say I have Canon stuff. I started out with a 2nd hand Canon D30, and at the time the only other choice was to spend double the amount on a Nikon D100, and I knew a few people with Canon equipment so could borrow / lend lenses.

For years Canon were in the lead, but that is certainly not the case now. All are very close and likely to leapfrog each other with each fresh release, especially Canon and Nikon.

Nikon bodies were generally more expensive, but now they have extended the range down and started to dominate the cheap end, while the higher spec cameras are more expensive than their nearest Canon competitors they also tend to be higher spec (eg, half decent weather sealing).

A good range of lenses is useful. This is one area where Canon now do have a good lead. Canon change their lens mount in the late 1980s, which put them at a disadvantage for quite a while against the others.

Nikon evolved their lens mount meaning that there was still a large supply of old lenses that could be used, but their recent budget bodies have dropped support for the older mechanical AF lenses, quite seriously restricting the amount of AF lenses that can be used. Nikon lenses tend to be a bit more expensive than Canon.

Sony have a half decent range, although poor compared to the others, and there are still a fair number of Minolta lenses that can be used (Sony bought up the Minolta SLR business including the lens mount).

Pentax have a massive base of old dirt cheap manual focus lenses (the K mount was made an open standard and used by loads of cheap own brand film cameras in the 70s, 80s and 90s), but while they do have a good range of short lenses they are quite limited on their range of telephoto lenses.

Olympus started from scratch with the 4/3 dSLR system and have slowly been builing up a range of lenses. While they do make some good lenses the prices will make your eyes water.

There is also a fair range of 3rd party lens suppliers such as Sigma. They do make some decent lenses, but their ranges are biased towards Canon and Nikon.

All the best

Keith

Check out the for sale section, LukeVFR is selling a Cannon 450D (or something ~ I know nothing about cameras) for cheap and is like new. Check it out.

It's really 6 of one and a half dozen of the other with regard to Nikon/Cannon thing. If you know anyone with either make, it's probably best to buy the make that they have. That way not only can they give you a basic tutorial on how to use that specific make (both Cannon and Nikon have very similar layouts and menu systems across the whole of their range, from basic to proper pro set-ups) and also the opportunity to borrow/switch lenses with them too, if they allow you that is!

Personally I've got a Nikon D50 - was their entry level model a few years ago and I've had it since then. I used to use a 35mm Nikon SLR and so had some lenses from that, so this was one of the major factors in my purchasing of it. Also a good friend of mine is a semi professional photographer uses Nikon cameras with no complaints.

At the end of the day though it's what's in the picture, not the kit used to take it that makes the biggest difference, so it comes down to personal preference for brand. Take yourself down to your local Jessops and ask to give both models a try. They usually take you through some of the basic features and let you snap a few pics with them - see which one 'feels' right to you and you should be onto a winner.

Cheers, Stu

Canon have fairly different button layouts on their pro spec (1 series) cameras. It is a bit of a pain.

To throw a completely different opinion into the mix, I'm just starting to get used to my Pentax K10D.

This was the best option for me as I have a range of old manual lenses. I've used my Dad's D100 and a Canon (can't remember which one!) but find the settings on the Pentax far more intuitive and 'at hand'.

Unlike the Nikon things aren't generally menu-driven, whilst you can alter things through the menu there are lots of buttons on the body itself which seem to be in the 'right' place. E.g. a three position switch for moving between manual focus, continuous auto-focus and single-focus.

It's also really well sealed, it got SOAKED (swimming in 2 litres of water in my rucksack this weekend thanks to heavy rain and a camelback accident) and is absolutely fine, it didn't even have the slightest hizzy turning on.

I've got the Nikon D60 with 18-55mm VR lens kit.

Brilliant camera. I've had several months and still haven't used all of the features.
