What do the two numbers pointed out mean and what is considered good and bad with them?
They are both way higher than normal and i have just downloaded that album in less than 10 mins, the big number on the right gradualy went up untill it peaked at 17000 kb/s the smaller one on the left dropped off to around 6 kb/s but was more speradic with its numbers, occasionaly jumping to higher than 10 or dropping to 2.
Just curious really since the figures are alot higher than the normal 1.2 kb/s and 0.00 kb/s i see.

p.s. the 17000 isnt a typo

Im not the most "computer minded" person so excuse me if this sounds stupid, my internet is shared between three people, i presume if the download maxed out the connection then they would not be able to use the internet?
Sounds wrong to me so im guessing im miss understanding something here

1700 kb/sec is your transfer rate/speed and would most probably mean your on a 16mb connection.
The left is showing your download speed as above and the right is your upload speed.

c_dug, as others have basically said, the numbers are transfer rates. The larger is the download rate, the smaller is the upload rate.
These rates are worked out on the general principal of speed calculations, only in this case it's total amount downloaded (or uploaded) vs time.
These calculations can be inacurate due to numerous reasons, most commonly a software bug. Usually this involves the computer effectively resetting the clock back to 0 (therefore you get a rediculous speed reported).
However, if you did manage to transfer data abnormally quick, chances are you just hit the 'sweet spot.' Within BT's network, the BT Exchange controls bandwidth throttling (to make sure you don't download faster than you should be able to). This is done using an "IP Profile" which is set to gradually reduce your allowed bandwith. Every 72hours the IP profile resets & releases all restrictions. This is the "sweet spot."
Other providers, for example Virgin, do exactly the same thing.
Whilst the IP Profile is resetting, it's possible to download at the fastest speed possible for the medium (ie, copper cable can be pushed up to 24Mbit/s).
I think you probably had a combination of calculation errors & IP Profile luck. |
