PostPosted: 11:32 - 11 May 2009    Post subject: DTX Mods? Reply with quote

I have a dtx125 which already has dep pipes and has bin de-restricted but im looking for a bit more power, i was going to buy a wr250x because that would be the ideal for me at this time but money is a bit of an issue so ive decided on modding my dtx and im really seeking adivce on which parts are best for peformance and for saving money.

Firstly im looking for a better set of pipes something thats loud but that i would get away with on the road maybe a race pipe that will fit without too much work.

secondly some new tyres preferably ones a little lower profile and with better grip that the stock ones i have on (pirelli sport demons).

Thirdly i want to change the apearence and was looking for some good hanguards with mirrors built in, also any ideas and inspiration i can get from people who have played about with their DT/DTXs to tell me what is best .
any help will be much appreciated.

When it comes to performance/money on a 125 the best option is buy a bigger bike.

If its already been de-restricted and already has a sport(ish) pipe.. you could do a couple of standard airbox mods.. but spending anymoney upgrading it would not have a massive effect on top speed! still going to be 125 slowness!

Put money aside and save up for a bigger bike!!! Laughing

Its not the profile" of tyres that really matters on bikes, especially on a 125! if your wanting a good set find the local bike shop or have look on a dt forum and find out what is the best tyre for what you do with the bike (off/on road, etc)

The WR250x is a pretty expensive option - why not look at a cheaper bigger bike?
Something like a CRM250 would make sense as a decent step-up from your DT and may even come in cheaper than your DT if you sell it.

Just realised the 'x' is the supermoto - still, I suspect if you look around, there are much more sensible cheaper supermoto alternatives. I got a mostly-converted DR600 supermoto for £600 a while ago.
Can't really see any good reason for something like the WR250x until it's pretty damn cheap, personally.

So you can't afford a big bike so you waste money doing pointless changes to your 125?

dont bother with airbox mods unless you fit a bigger carb but its hassle and more hassle.. reeds with give you more performance but its miniscule.. what pipe you using? if you have only done the wire trick and running stock pipe then cut the front pipe open and remove restriction plates and fit a dep tail pipe (best sounding pipe imo). also the dtx has a catalyst so block that off (tube runs from front pipe to airbox). You can take the snorkle off but it only makes the sound deeper.. I prefer to keep it on..

You can also unplug the servo so the ypvs is pinned open like the old dtr's.. you'll have no bottom end power but mid and top end will be a blast.. you get a bit more power as normally you have to pin the throttle to get the povervalve fully open

as for mirrors.. turn your head.. I havent used mirrors in years.. just need to keep your head switched on.. Handguards I have Racetech.. best looking handguards for less than £20..

oh and stan stephens 2t tuner will stage 3 your barrel/head for £150... I havent had it done but its a port/polish etc so it'll give you a bit more power..

as for tyres, pirelli spot demons are prob the best tyres for the bike.. I can bet yam tested loads of tyres and came to the conclusion than the sport demons where the best..

save a bit of money. do your theory then take your A2 test on your own bike.. if you fail just retake your test.. even if it takes you 4 attempts at the test it would be cheaper than going to a bike school, having 3 lessons at like £80 a day and then the test....

Engine from what I've learnt is a waste of time trying to modify , it'll only go so fast mate . Best thing is to get it running nicely and go on a diet Laughing

Tyres I know 3 kinds . Bridge , Pirelli and Avon . Those are the ones that match front and back . There is another set I've seen on a German DT that are waifer thin lol , but cant figure out the name of them .

Handguards theres loads but it depends mostly on colour ( ive had a headache finding white in all styles ) Acerbis do the biggest range , but only a few look good on a DT . The set similar to Elements Racetech ones are pretty good a cheap , but for a DTX I prefer a full wrap around . That leaves these following options ( none of them have a built in mirror btw )

Acerbis do the rally , rally 2 , supermoto and a couple others . My fave is the rally brush as its the most subtle , could do without the huge logo though .

Then Polisport , They do what looks like the rally guards but at half the price being ALL plastic . Also get the option of no logo Cool

Actually if you want it really aggressive , you could spring for a set of XT handlebars ( £35 from Yam ) and fit the Yamaha guards , by far the best handgurads ive seen , but NOT cheap !!

Btw affording a bigger bike is one thing . But if you can slowly work on what you've got , when and if you have the money ... it works out more conveniently even if it's the less favoured option

If you've got a DTX, then you should be able to sell it for a reasonable amount of money which should give you a pretty decent selection of much faster bikes.

Keep your eye out for a complete engine / carb / wiring loom set up from either a DT200WR or a DT230 Lanza as this will give you a decent mid-range power boost. Nothing will give you more top speed unless you also alter the ratio of the sprockets Wink

Dont be tempted by the Athena big bore kits as they are almost £500 now and only take the motor to 170cc Shocked

If you have gutted the front pipe, fitted an after market silencer and keep the rest of the service items (air filter, spark plug and piston rings etc)in tip top condition there's not much else you can do except for putting the bike on a diet (mirrors, tail tidy, passenger pegs etc) Thumbs Up
