What with all the chat on here recently about the demise of motorsport in general I got chatting to a mate of mine about Group B. We are both too young to have seen it for real, but are both compelled by the vids and stories and articles we have read and by the cars themselves. Got searching on YouTube for some stuff and I came across this series of vids (I think together they are from a Duke video about Group B) which offer an insight into, and a bit of an explanation on, the cars and rules and people from the era - they're all about 10mins long too. Even if you know all about it already there are some interviews with the drivers towards the end where they talk about the stresses and strains of dealing with such powerful machines, and what the factories did with the cars once it was disbanded. There's also a good lot of gratuitous car porn contained within, so either way it's worth a watch!

Part 1
Part 2
Part 3
Part 4
Part 5
Part 6
Part 7

Could have put this in 'Found on the Net' but I wanted it to be a bit of a discussion/info sharing thread on the go about Group B it's self rather than just the vid links. Any of you got any photos or other links to related stuff (e.g. from festival of speed etc.)?

Really can't imagine what it must have been like to be around the rally circus at the time. It must have been one of the last 'pure' (i.e. not totally ruled by legislation and health and safety regs) forms of mainstream motorsport, and although obviously it is a good thing that we don't have so many deaths due to racing incidents anymore, have we lost some of the passion from it too?

Cheers, Stu

If i remember rightly the Essex police had an RS200.
It crashed late one night and killed both occupants.
"Speed wasn't a factor."
Does anyone else remember this?

Thank you for wasting an hour of my time.

By wasting I mean I was watching all of them rather than doing stuff I should have been doing. Laughing

The engine from the 6r4 made an appearence in the XJ220, that's how powerful it was.

I used to love class B rallying, it was the stuff of my boyhood dreams.
Anyone got £80,000 going spare?

I would *LOVE* one of those. I had an MG Metro Turbo, though I suspect that would be much more fun! Bet it's a git to park though!

EDIT: The original one, not that 'shed'!

You're more than welcome, but tell me about it - I've got exams in the next week or 2 so I shouldn't really be trawling the web looking for this stuff either!

Yeah, I didn't know that but they go into all that 'what did group b actually do for the industry' stuff in the last couple of bits of the vid which was why I liked it - gave a complete bookend to the film I thought.

Ahahaha - I love it! I remember seeing something similar sitting in a car park back in my hometown (although they had gone to the trouble of priming the whole bodywork so it was at least one colour) and after we all gave it a right royal slagging it was one of my mates who said something like 'I think that was trying to be something from group B' which was the first time I ever heard of it. As they talk about in the vid though, would have been interesting to see what would have happened to both the ford and metro given a couple of years on the circuit to work out their gremlins.

Personally, my favorite car from that period in the looks department was the Lancia 037 - I especially love the ott mud curtains over the rear wheels

But for genuine competitiveness It has to be the 205 T16.

Glad you all enjoyed that though.

Ended up marshalling on the rally stage at the Goodwood FoS last weekend. Saw most of these cars in the flash, that Lancia was most impressive and only got more so as it passed a couple of feet from your legs going sideways around a corner at full chat. The 6R4 was also brilliant, one of the guys in the club I was there with won a trip around the rally stage in one of the two examples on site. Serious case of jealousy watching it go sideways off the start line Neutral
