Hi All,

My Kawasaki Er6 started to sounds like a lose bag of nuts at around 4k revs on the way home last night.

I have looked underneath and can see a break where the two down pipes merge into one before entering the silencer. There a gap all the way around just before the collar that attaches pipes to silencer. I am able to move the pipes slightly now where they hang.

The bike is a 07 plate with 16k mileage. I have rang garage and booked her in for 15k service (didn't realise I missed service until problem arose and checked service manual). She is going in next Friday (22nd May).

Will it be ok to continue riding the bike as is or could I do alot more damage? Was going to see if I could get an exhaust bandage for temporary measure...

Thanks,
Ow

Exhaust bandage isnt cheap and the shear forces will bugger it up quick.

Expect one very hefty bill for a new exhaust....

I would have a word with the garage, or try to source one else where......
Before you get the service done.

Temp measure, some chemical metal, Beans tine and jubilee clips, that if you can get them round the area of the 2-1 bit.

Might work on a four, possibly even on a twin, but they melt a bit on singles, as I discovered recently. Be careful, is all I'm saying.

Seems to have happened to a few bikes so don't be fobbed off with the 'this never happens' rubbish.

Would appreciate a picture if you can get one.

Thanks for all the advise guys... I might attempt the Bean Can as outlined....

Sickpup I will try to get a photo uploaded. Its a clean break as i am able to move pipes slightly without interfering with sliencer.

If anyone else has an ER-6 they should also few this thread I found as it appears to be a common problem on these bikes:
https://www.bikersoracle.com/er5/forum/showthread.php?p=31480#post31480

Ill let you know how I go with warranty claim. Also if I ride bike as is will I cause damage, is it safe?

Can't view that thread without being logged in.

If the break is clean and isn't caused by rusting through then you should be able to get it welded up easily. Riding around won't do any damage, except to maybe your ear drums.

07 bike?

Should hopefully still be under the 2 yr warranty then.

In my experience of dealing with kawa warranty claims through dealers they have been first class Thumbs Up

Have had stuff as small as rear reflectors claimed and supplied.

Last time I went for a service the dealer whipped out a new clock fascia, said this is for you. He had ordered it a year before when I was last there as he saw mine was cracked Thumbs Up

Would have run out on 1st March 2009 if he bought it on the first day of the new registration.

Hi All,

The 2 year warranty should be valid until June.

I have uploaded a few images of exhaust. The gap is just before collar and is all the way around:

As the bike is booked in for its 15k service next Friday I hope to have this corrected as well.

It is a strange one, I know it's happened to a few bike but no one seems to be certain why it's happening. I got my 08 model back in February and working part time I'm just under 8000mls and wondering when mine will snap. As I'm looking at keeping the bike for 4 years I'm probably going to pay out for the extended warranty as I'm looking at putting somewhere in the region of 200,000mls on this bike over the next few years.

Thank you for the pictures.

Overall the bike has been pretty good, around 10k a year in all weather and is good on fuel etc.

I emailed the dealer I purchased from last night with pics etc. They have since entered a claim with Kawasaki on my behalf and will let me know their decision (keep you posted).

Reading other posts on er6 forum Kawasaki seem to be pretty good with dealing with these issues. Looking at my warranty last night it actually runs out in June 09 so I might have to get extended warranty for piece of mind.

Thanks

Just to quickly say that the downpipes have now been replaced on my er6 along with front brake switch, coils and underseat lock all covered by Kawasaki's warranty. No fuss at all with claims.

Sounds alot nicer....

Top work from Kawasaki Thumbs Up

I had an ER6N as hire bike for 6 months, put 32,000 miles on it and it had 3 exhausts in that time!
