just how reliable / un reliable are 2 stroke bikes, so many horror storys.

everytime iv went far from home my 2 stroke has broken down, 1 thing or another...

Depends how well they have been/you look after them.

If you got the scheduled maintainance they will be no more unreliable than a 4t

To be fair to my old TDR the only times it broke were my fault mainly, apart from oiled up plugs.

It never left me stranded though, always managed to struggle home alright Thumbs Up

The only reason they not is because they are mainly owned by kids that have tight purse strings and don't look after them.


A 4t's can take far more abuse and are more likely to be fine if a service is missed 2t's are less happy if they miss a service.

iv asked a few questions like this on here, im just worried if i buy a 2007/8/9 aprilia rs 125, its gona be just as unreliable, and i would hate that so much...

Only if you dont ride the geared bike properly, keep it sitting at low revs for along time and the plug can oil up, obviously a scooter with its CVT doesnt have that issue.

The actual engine bit works the same, although i'd say most scooters are a fair bit less tuned than an RS125.

but i want a standard restricted one really...

woops, i somtimes keep my bike at low revs when im just takin it slow, thought it would be better for the engine.

thats my plan, they do seem rather cheep.

like a few round the £2200 mark for a low milage 2008 model, and there like £4500 new or somthing arnt they?

and thats not a one off either, there all around that price

I wouldnt worry too much about that, i only had trouble when i left the bike ticking over for 10 minutes, and that was an poorly maintained 250.

As for bike costs, im probably not the person to ask, never had a 125 so never looked into the prices.

Would consider a 4t 125 if you're purely after reliability, something like a CG125 or Ybr125 are prretty bullet proof, though they dont really have the image of the RS Laughing

Realistically about 95 for a newish one and a 0-60 of about 7 seconds.

and if uyou want a 100+ mph rs 125 its gonna be a race pipe / filter full power cdi etc. running expensive oil and make sure it warms upp properly before giving it means . and then shitting bricks every time you rag it just waiting for the piston rings to go . my ns125 did 10k miles and had 0 rebuilds int hat time my mats 06 rs 125 had 2 rebuilds @ £200+ labour each time . because he would ragg it just to be the fastest one etc . yet my ns was slightly slower and never broke down he had issues with plugs + the cdi playin up etc.




there reliable if you just freistrict them and take care with them but one you race fuilter tham and pipes and playing with the carbs for more power your just reduicing the life expectancy of it more and more .

They tend to pollute a lot more than 4 strokes and that's why they don't use them for racing anymore.

less efficient on fuel as it was built for out & out speed.

As far as I know they don't lubricate the engine parts just as well as the 4 stroke engine. So be prepared for high engine wear!

They are easier to maintain due to less parts than what is found in a 4 stroke engine.

My pal has got 2 stroke, and they are good for what they were made to do - speed, but less forgiving than a 4 stroke if you don't maintain the oil & petrol mixture properly, plus the usual maintenance like any bike these days.

Really when did the 125/250 GP get cancelled then?


The KTM GP 125 has 55bhp and weights 130kg with rider!

It's gone that way because of the reflection of the sales of production bikes.

There is no point developing 2t top flight race bikes when all the R&D into making the engines faster is wasted. They are 4 stroke because they can put the 4 stroke racing development into production in production bikes to come (the new cross plain crank in the R1 for example.)

They didn't disallow 2 strokes but allowed 990cc 4 strokes to compete. The 4 strokes obviously had a massive power advantage over the 500cc 2 strokes so they stopped using 2t's.

They cut the engine size to 800cc for safety (Even though 800cc bikes now go faster than the 990s)

I think 2t bikes are still allowed to compete in MotoGP though I am not sure on the regulations. I assume they are limited to 500cc.

In the sence that there are only 4t bikes competing yes, I cannot find where the rules changed to ban them.

The first year 990 4t's were allowed they where competing along side 500 2ts. The 4t's spunked all over them and the next year it was all 4ts.

I may be wrong mind.
