Please help! I can't get my NSR125RX to start at all.
It started when I pulled away from work and felt the bike behaving differently. It didn't seem to have much pull in higher revs. I thought it may sort itself out as it had been cold for a while. A little further down the road, and I lost all power. The engine sounded very growly and eventually gave up completely.
I managed to push it back to where I work and had a look. Fuel seems OK, spark plug was a bit black but I sorted that out and got it sparking again. Compressoin test was OK so I know the piston rings are fine. The airbox was clean. Bump starting had little effect. It sounded like it wanted to go but couldn't for some reason.
Since I had it two weeks ago, I haven't been able to get a level reading from the gear oil window, so I believe it needs topping up, but I fail to see how this will stop it from starting.
Any ideas? Please? |

Hi
Difficult to say. The carb on the NSR does not have an accelerator pump circuit so should not squirt any fuel in when you twist the throttle, so twisting the throttle should not make it smell of petrol more.
I would be tempted to say it is running rich. Check the choke is turning off fully and check that the carb float bowl is not overflowing (maybe from the float height being wrong or a piece of grit in the needle valve).
A new plug might well help for a short while with these problems.
All the best
