When they approach a roundabout that say has 4 exits, symmetrical to one another, they are going from 1 exit accross to the opposite, yet they indicate right.

Why do people do that? are they thick or is there a reason?

This is getting really common now and is escpecially annoying on mini roundabouts where I will stop to allow someone coming the other way, who is indicating right, to turn right accross my path.

I know it is not accidental because if you study the driver/rider they are only moving ahead, don't falter or move as if to turn and then correct it, just full intention to go straight ahead, and somehow the need to indicate right?

Years ago that was how people were taught to signal at roundabouts. If I recall it was to stop people at the first exit pulling out on you because they thought you were going to turn left. Most roundabouts back then though were single lanes.

I've always figured its because they seem to think that indicating right means that they aren't going to turn left. A similar one I notice is drivers indicating right as they go round a roundabout (I'm guessing to tell me they aren't going to drive into a verge and will in fact follow the roundabout around) and will then turn off whilst still indicating right.

Personally I hardly ever indicate on roundabouts, simply due to the fact that no one seems to understand what indications actually mean. If you aren't indicating I notice they are just that bit more wary of what you are going to do next as they don't have a preconception of what they think you mean.

Exactly the reason why I do it 50% of the time. I always indicate off roundabouts, only sometimes on if I deem it necessary and useful to other road users.

You don't have to indicate left when going straight on at a mini roundabout. They teach you not to. Indicate right is how it's taught now.

I always indicate where I'm turning on a roundabout.

I was taught this:

Arrow If going left, indicate to the left and stay in the left lane at all times.

Arrow If going straight, don't indicate at the junction only indicate left before your exit and keep in the left lane unless directed on the road.

Arrow If turning right for any other exits, you must indicate right and stay in the right lane, indicate left before your exit.

I understand others are taught different.

If the exit you are taking is before 12 0'clock, but not the first exit turning left, then no signal should be given entering the round about. you would signal left as you pass the exit prior to the exit that you are taking. If the exit is after 12 o'clock then a right signal should be given entering the round about and a left signal given when passing the exit prior to the the one you are taking. If it is the first exit turning left then a left signal should be given on the approach to the round about.

Funny, I was doing round abouts with some of my pupils today. getting the judgement to merge onto a round about seems to be the most difficult for most drivers.

I never had that problem with roundabouts.
My problem was being to hesitant when pulling away at junctions.
My instructor constantly kept saying (would you have took that gap on your bike?, my usual answer was yes, even though my bike was a 50).

For some reason I never take smaller gaps in my car. When with my bike I take any and always feel confident in doing so.

Well I for one am glad there ARE drivers out there who HAVEN'T forgotten the fact they have indicators on their vehicles, it makes me rant when they don't indicate ever...!

I would prefer over-indication to nothing at all.

My biggest gripe is the driver who overtakes, pulls in, then slows down immediately....ggggrrr makes me cross... Evil or Very Mad

Oooh.

A pet hate, poor indication on roundabouts... I admit during the lesson I took before sitting my bike test, I failed to indicated for a turning that was second off but after 12 o clock on the roundabout...

Its people who just don't indicate at all while turning left (first off) that anger me the most... Oddly, its almost as if I hate having to wait needlessly more than I'd hate to be squashed by some daftie driving some sort of truck type thing.

Oh... And if you end up arguing with someone who's just plain wrong on a point of Highway code... Grrr!! There was some old git on The Jeremy "I'm so middle class I bleed pinot grigio" Vine Show who was trying to say middle lane hogging was correct driving technique.

His argument was that if you stay in the middle lane you don't have to worry about cars merging on and off the motorway.

I can say without hesitation if he'd been standing in front of me I might have set fire to his face and put it out with shovel with few qualms.

No idea why issues pertaining to driving can engender such rage... Confused

Thumbs Up

So now I understand this a little more, if it is AFTER 12 oclock you are required to indicate, so people that are doing it on 12 must simply come from areas where the exits they take going straight over are after 12 oclock.

Am I wrong?

You need to rephrase your question.

https://www.direct.gov.uk/en/TravelAndTransport/Highwaycode/DG_070338 On mini roundabouts you can indicate right to go straight on, although it doesn't say that here.

I'm usually fine on roundabouts but I got confused on one the other day, I was going straight over (as in straight ahead, at 12 o'clock), but there are 2 exits before the one I'm taking, I wasn't sure whether to indicate or not, but as it was straight over I only indicated as I came off, should I have indicated right as I was passing the other two exits aswell?

I was taught that you don't indicate if you are you going straight over to the second exit, but not what to do if you're going straight over to the third exit! Thumbs Up

@Pickledswede.

The indicate right is for 12 o'clock and later not for the amount of exits afaik.

I am more than aware of that. Its a calculated risk, however I have far less 'incidents' with cagers using my method.

Technically it is your fault for not giving way to traffic coming from the right. The guy not using his indicator would not have been the cause of the accident, your fault for pulling out - In my opinion anyway. (I assume you meant that if you were waiting to pull out on to the roundabout)

Personally I don't care if people indicate or not, I just hate it when they could have used an indicator to benefit me.. If they're indicating wrong you generally know by their road position or behaviour.

My only pet hate is the roundabout on the way home from work. THere's poor visibility because of the stupid overgrown hedges in the middle of the roundabout. People fly round that roundabout at 40-50mph and you've got to be quick. I hate people that come round not indicating right to go around (straight on from my view) when I'm trying to take the 1st exit left.. If I knew they were going round I could have went but no, I've got to wait until they pass and by that time more traffic is coming doing the same Confused

So where does them not indicating permit you to over-ride the Highway code which clearly states that you are to give way to traffic from the right hand side?

Probably wouldn't get away with it, but people who don't indicate are just ignorant bastards (ncrn).

It's not necessary on mini roundabouts as there's not room for more than one vehicle at a time anyway. But on larger ones that are busy if there's endless cars coming around some use their indicators but a vast majority don't use any or use the wrong ones. Fact is if I sit there assuming everyone is coming all the way around becuase they can't indicate i'd be sat there all day waiting for a gap to get 50ft of fully loaded truck onto it.

Therefore if I see someone coming from the opposite side with no indicators on i'll happily go, they've got time to slow and wait for me and it's their own damn fault if they're coming all the way around, should be indicating. You can't change peoples poor driving abilities so adapt.

I'd suggest it is far more important on mini roundabouts as it is a hell of a lot harder to judge where someone is going to go because there are no lanes. On larger roundabouts (in Bristol anyway) there are designated lanes for each exit, meaning that when you are in a lane you follow it round to your exit. Also meaning that indication is unnecessary as you just need to look at someone's lane to see where they are going.

If you think you can fit in the gap then its fair enough; I do that as well.

I think perhaps I could have explained myself better anyway; the majority of roundabouts I come across are both traffic light and lane controlled, usually meaning that if there is a gap there is a 2-3 second pause in traffic or you simply wait until your light turns green before you can go on the roundabout. All you have to worry about then are the cars around you, and as you are supposed to follow your lane around the roundabout indication is only really necessary if you are going to change your lane. Depending on some other roundabouts I will indicate if I am going to come off the roundabout; otherwise I won't have any indication at all, as I have said before I find that if I am indicating right some car drivers take that as a sign that I am coming off the roundabout. Which means emergency stops while turning and so on which are never fun...

It is a pain, a 12 oclock exit on a mini roundabout, I am coming from their 12, they indicate right and I of course wait, and they sail past.

It is a real annoyance in my opinion, people should stop it, I appreciate comments concerning multi lane roundabouts with possible wide exits.
