Pointless technology only one I would even consider viable is the hydrogen powered honda that they are working on.

Agreed, even lithium cells have too many issues to be a proper mainstream alternative to petrol vehicles, hydrogen fuel cells are the way to go.

Must admit though, it'd be interesting to have a go on one just to see what the power delivery is like.

the thing that always makes me worried about teh Hydrogen prototypes is they fudge teh pressures the tank would be under by quoting things in kPa rather than PSi which (from tyres) more people are used to.

How can you be a petrolhead hooligan with no petrol?

Id give it a go, would be good for a cheap ride to work and back Thumbs Up

An idea i've heard thrown around would be to have easily removeable batteries that get recharged at "charging stations" much like a petrol station.

i.e. role in, swap battery (instead of fill up), role out.

Would rely on manufacturers agreeing on a standard battery though which would then need to be majorly mass produced.

Hydrogen bike, electric bike .. neither are alternative to petrol/fossil fuels until someone comes up with a way of making MASSIVE amounts of electricity ... we can't even supply homes/business needs with renewable energy ... put the burden of EVERY road vehicle too ... we are so far short of a solution its not funny!!! Thumbs Down

These pr1cks need to look at the underlying/fundamental problem of generating copious amounts of 'clean' (or at least renewable) electricity before any of this is worthwhile ..

It's not new, but is a bit overpriced. I may still try and convert my FX400 to electric. For commuting shortish distances in <40mph limits it may make sense and should be damn cheap to run.
Won't cope with much more than that.

I prefer the idea of starting with a push bike and electrifying that - so it's still reasonably light, rather than starting with something heavy and needing lots more heavy batteries to keep it going, when it's not going to go that fast anyway.

Ie, like this:

https://www.stealthelectricbikes.com.au/stealth_bomber.html
3kw one claims 75kph (45mph) for up to 30 miles; and you can always pedal too! Unfortunately you'd have to get one with that sort of power SVAd. This sort of thing can be made relatively easily and for not too much money comparatively.

I could do 40 miles in under an hour on my bike quite easily, but I wouldn't then want to wait 4 hours for it to recharge. Once they start doing fast charge systems then it will be something worth looking at it. While doing a project at university (electronic engineering) the post grad told me that it won't be long before you will be able to get this sort of device (quick charging)....

And also a motor draws most current (the shit that drains batteries fast) when it is first started up, once up to speed it tails off... if you are thrashing an electric bike round corners where it is constant slow down and then accelerate out of the corners, it is going to properly drain the battery.

And be careful playing with batteries and electric circuits G, batteries don't have current limiting devices like power supplies, build circuits wrong and then can rinse all the current out of batteries damn fast and blow up quick easily...

Out of interest would it not be possible to connect some kind of generator type device to the pedals to keep topping up the battery as you go?

For your typical commute it should be less of an issue - I currently do about 6.5 miles each way. So a 15-20 mile total range would do me fine.
For standard (not fuel cell) batteries, I can see a 'quick charge' possibly being more a case of just swapping batteries, though that'd require an unlikely amount of standardisation.

And don't worry, I've done quite a bit of research including into how nasty batteries etc can be - it'll be a while before I do anything, anyway.

It'd be much more efficient to just directly pedal than use a generator.

Use some sort of PSU to test stuff first G, at least that way you can see when you get some crazy current being drawn.

I read somewhere that the EU was trying to pass a ruling that all electric cars had to have 'sound effects' added to them so that you could hear a vehicle approaching because apparently engines make the most noise in modern cars. You wonder if some of the politions have any sense as I am pretty sure a lot of the noise in modern cars (note not bikes) comes tyres.

I like the idea of changing batteries although a long with that standard of size and connecters you'd have to have standards for battery charges as I am sure they'd go duff (lose how much they store) pretty quickly.

On a 6.5 commute I'd be tempted to cycle to and from work!

I've got to sort the bearings on my cyclocross bike out and will be cycling some when I do - when I worked a bit closer I'd cycle on the dry days and ride on the wet days.
Problem is that and I tend to get pretty sweaty cycling, so need to have a shower after I get to work, which is more time.

Cars these days do worry me the way they seem to make more noise from the tyres - on my commute I definitely think the lack of engine noise from the bike (currently a mildly tuned zx9 with a full race system) would be the biggest issue - I usually blip the throttle coming up to dodgy areas, while filtering, etc.

Would agree with that, when I am riding my bike and coming up to some tight filtering blipping the throttle to let them know your there always seems to help (although you get the odd w@nker that doesn't like filtering bikes).

You say the gym is down the road from your work, surely you could jig it so you could use the showers there or go for a morning gym session or something.

Yea, that'd be the plan as there's no showers at work - problem is the enthusiasm to get up that early! Would probably only do it two or three days a week.

Might actually sort the bearings this weekend; they're a sealed cartridge style, which is apparently unusual for cycles, so a bit harder to find.

I wonder if there's a parrallel universe where we're all on an electric bike forum, and someone posts up a new fangled engine that runs on that smelly dangerous stuff called "petrol"..... Thinking
