Good Bike security

Hi Guys,

i have a Beta Techno trials bike and wanted to make sure i could do everything possible to stop it getting nicked.
I live in a nice area but this changes nothing.

Currently i have a big fat chain attached to the front wheen, a smaller chain with a 150Db alarm on the back wheel, a motion detector with 120Db alarm attached to the frame
I live in a rented house so cant drill anything into the walls or floor to anchor it, also my shed isnt big enough to store the bike so i have ordered a "bike tent" to keep it out of the rain
I have no vent holes in the breaks so can use disk locks
I have also chained my garden gate shut.

As i dont have it garaged i cant find anyone who will insure this bike as its off road and itsnt garaged and doesnt use a key.


I have had a bike stolen from be in the past (that was locked int he garage with a disk lock AND and chain while we were sleeping)
Any advice? anything else i could do?

Can you see the tent from your window?

If you can, think about getting a webcam, point it at the tent, run it through a spare 'puter with motion detection software on and with the alarm set to go off inside the house/bedroom. There's a good chance you could even catch the feckers at it too.

No much use unless you, or someone else, is at home though, obviously.

I wanted to do something similar, but recently blew up my wireless cam receiver after plugging the wrong power adapter into it (24v into 12v does not go...)

would be good but my bedroom window is just above the tent so i will hear the alarm go off, run downstairs (with my golf club) and have a chat with the people involved,

Its more so during the day, or evenings that i am not at home.

So best bet is just to plaster the thing with alarms? they are pretty cheap on ebay - my neighbours are the kind of people who will actually care (some neighbours are is during the day)

Maybe beg my land lady to let me drill an anchor

Convince the bloke next door that trials bikes are good, then make sure yours is more secure than his. Job done. Joking aside, there is a bit of truth here. If your bike is more secure than similar/better bikes in the same area, you'll probably be fine.

Also, I'm in rented accommodation too, and first thing I did was stick a ground anchor in. In this situation, forgiveness is much easier to get than permission, and odds are, no one will ever even notice the small drill holes left behind when you leave.

If you're really against a ground anchor in the floor/wall, get a large plant pot, fill it wit concrete, and anchor into that instead.

May i suggest the use of a telegraph pole or lampost to secure the bike to (if it ain't locked to nothing it's as good as gone in my estimation).

I would also suggest you get a chain with minimum 16mm links to prevent the chain being silently bolt-cropped, Almax Series III or IV is probably as good as you'll get, and guaranteed crop-proof! (Warning: Expensive).

I think the best compromise is a cheap alarm, and a bloody good chain

its a trials bike right so fairly small and light. Id be keeping it IN the house if I was that worried. Id say something like that would eventually go missing if kept outside in a not massively secure state. Keeping it inside out of the question?? I must admit id struggle to sleep with a bike kept outside overnight! Good Luck

put a ural sidecar frame and body on it and paint the thing in black hammerite. Noone will touch it then

If you use a chain make sure it's nowhere near the floor as it gives the thieving gits somewhere to get some leverage with the bolt cutters! If it's up in the air it makes it a 'little' harder for them!

Alarms do bugger all really... four blokes with a scaffold pole through each wheel and it will be in the back of a van before anyone has really noticed that alarm go off!

If you really want to stand a chance of getting it back, 'tracker' maybe but it's not cheap! Chains and locks will delay it being stolen a bit, and put off the joy riders but if someone want's it, it's gonna go no matter what you do

chains etc. are pointless if you can't chain to something immovable like an anchor, post etc.

they'll just pick it up with a bar through each wheel or pick the front up and drag it into the van.
