Right, im after a '90 sport bike, preferably something a little different and ive always ahd a soft spot for ninja's.
I think ive settled on them due to their price, looks, power (but useable power) and for the sheer fun factor.
Can anyone give me any information, advice etc on them including anything i should be looking out for/what a high mileage would be, which models to go for/avoid?
cheers!
Thom

Hi Thom.
ZXR H1, H2 (89,90) Old skool almost slabslide looks.
Rocky(stiff) rear end, right way up forks.
Pokey engines based on tuned gpx motors.
J1, J2 (91, 92)
Almost a complete redesign.
New frame and engine and much sleeker fairing profiles.
Again still stiff on the rear,(tried to rectify with the J2 but didnt) upside down forks (Scaffold tubes!!) and a front end that rolls into and through corners like no tomorrow.
Engine limited to around 100bhp at the crank, about 90-95 on the wheel. Too little for some, just enough for most. Very punchy mid range especially at 4-6k.
L1, 2 and 3. (93-95)
Same design as previous. Supposedly better rear suspensions.
Slightly smaller diam forks but still a nice corner'er.
Now with ram air, a better(originally intended?) spec engine, essentialy higher compression ratio, longer lift and duration cams with appropiate springs and a different CDI to allow slightly higher redline.
Better top end but lacks a little less in the mid.
There's also the race versions of the J1 which is the K1. Essentially a J with a L engine and a few extra bits.
And the later M which is the L with again a few extra bits.
Anything later is likely a ZX7r which I have no experience with except trying one once but not enough to scrutinise it.
Questions? please ask. ____________________ **WAS FITTED "WRONG WAY ROUND" !** CANT ACCOUNT FOR THE STUPID ! |

I bought an L1 a few weeks ago, see thread here:
https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=172075&highlight=zxr+750
I can honestly say it has exceeded my expectations. Having ridden 15 year old sportsbikes before (and been very underwhelmed by the handling), I was expecting the ZXR to be a little 'mushy' and underpowered. Reality is that I found the handling to be superb (much like the ZX7R), and after not having ridden in 3 months or so this was a perfect bike to get back on my favourite twisties.
As Coxyzxr said, the L1 does lack mid-range power. I find this is both a blessing and a curse. I find that town riding suffers for it (constantly down the 'box to find useable power), but show it a decent road where you can keep the revs over 7k I find very entertaining. It's almost a challenge to keep the bike on the boil going into bends (whereas on the ZX10R I could go into a bend very haphazard and use the strong mid-range to force myself out the other side).
There is of course the comfort issue. I was expecting mine to be uncomfortable having done tens of thousands of miles aboard ZX7Rs, so not really an issue for me (although it is the most uncomfy bike I have ridden), but have a ride of one first if you're not used to the the extreme riding position.
In the other thread my criteria was:

So far, so good . All in all, a good sportsbike that has a little more character than some of the soulless bikes that the Jap four churn out sometimes.
Happy hunting . ____________________ Current: ZZR1400

I think it may well be the J1/J2 i go for then as i'd prefer the midrange over the top end of the later model. Saying this is a H1/H2 comes up cheap enough i may well be tempted by one as i like the old school styling and it would be the perfect basis for the mods i have planned.
I'll have a bit of a search about and see whats what, cheers lads! ____________________ Current Bike: 1996 Yamaha TRX850 (The Japanese-Ducati One).
