So i work in newcastle upon Tyne and have been parking my bike outside my office (in the city centre) in what seems to be a designated bike parking area.

anyway.., a few others park there and luckily for me i didn't have my bike there on the day all the others got ticketed. All got standard £35 fines doubled to £70 if not paid within 28 days.

on speaking with some of the council parking authority i've been lead to believe that a petition and a few photos could see the bay turned pro motorcycle, as theres no other parking for bikes elsewhere..well apart from a car park over the road, but £6 a day is extorsion!

i was wondering what you guys thought? if any of you had any previous experiance with this kind of stuff?

any input would be nice.

cheers lads.

But Westminster's situation is slightly different, I think. If all you are after is the repurposing of a single bay based on the fact that x number of bikes use it a day, then you might be better off with a letter writing campaign to a councillor rather than a petition, in my view.

Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

However, some picks of the alleged parking area with any signs and road markings and a copy of the ticket with the wording used would be useful for information.

Seems Newcastle is aware of its requirement to provide parking, but sounds a bit suspect that bikes have been free to park there for a while then get done en mass. Pics would be interesting of the bay & signs

You have to wonder if it was a pushbike bay. You know the type, just have the metal stands in the ground.
But as has been posted, pics would help.
Could be if it is a cycle one, that some cyclist has complained about not being able to park their bike.... In the space.

I would natter you local councillor and also get all who got a ticket to write and complain about the fines.

Spain rocks! Here you can park on pretty much any sidewalk as long as it's more than a few metres wide. I think it works out well, they're not much of an obstruction...

every council is obliged by law to provide powered two wheeler parking so you need to find out how many parking spaces they have for bikes and you may find just by making enquires about it that that bay suddenly becomes officially for Motorcycles

Not really, as someone who at times pushes a double buggy, often forced onto the road due to inconsiderate car parking, I understand the need to keep the pavements clear (don't even mention the shops which jam their stock into every space, I just leave a trail of destruction as I force my way through)
