Experience with a Honda xr600/next bike

Seen a 1995 xr600 for sale... sort of semi interested in it, looks in good condition and comes with a couple nice tarty bits... Would have to sell my bike to get it, although I have an interest free overdraft...

But what are they actually like, it is a bit far away for me to go and test. The last single I owned was a honda city fly 125 so it is quite a bit different, never had a kickstart bike and never owned a proper off-roader.

I know that most of miles will be on the road, a and b road hooning. Hopefully it will get me into doing some off-roading to. When money permits I'd probably get a set of supermoto wheels for it too. I used to ride my bike everyday, however since I have come to university I only use it when I am at home, which is the summer holidays, christmas and easter (and the odd weekend). So I won't be able to do that many miles on it. I would however like to have a go at some small touring (just within the UK at the moment), I know it isn't the bike for it but I presume it will take it fine (although 1000 mile oil changes). The above paragraph makes me think I should get a Transalp, but with my Dad having some one they seem a bit boring.

So has anyone got one or some experience with them?

And then comes the question, do I want an off-road bike. I enjoyed my off-road experience day and seemed to take to it pretty well. But with my end of my restriction period looming I am thinking I could get anything (like a zx7r)... meh I am not even sure what type of bike I want let alone a make (although I quite like Honda) and model. I probably should get a cheap cbr600f while I am at university and when I finish get something nice... but I am just not attracted to the cbr600f.

Hornet 250 has been great fun and taught me quite a bit, but I think the chance of more power and something new is very appealing, maybe I should keep it and save my pennies.

ide say its totaly the wrong bike for you
hooning ? they dont like to go much over 80mph for long
a roads they dont like them and will bore you silly
never had a kick start bike well theres a nack to starting a big 600 single get it wrong and you brake your foot
to be honist a comp trail bike is not gonna be very good as a main bike and i think a more road biased bike would suit your needs much better

Well depends on how big the a-roads are, my hornet 250 doesn't go much over 80mph as it and I still manage to hoon about on some A-roads. I manly stay off the boring a-roads any way, and I sometimes think, do I need a bike with that much more power, I really enjoy thrashing the bike and I doubt I'd be able to do that on a sports 600.

Hmm decisions, also realised the bikes doesn't have pillion pegs which isn't so good.

I also think I'd like a 2-stroke, but I'd like to come home and have a bike that works (in my experience they often aren't working).

Gah! See I am far to undeceive, I think I need to go and test ride bikes to make my mind up which bike I want.

The hornet 600 was tempting, but I think I will find it too similar to my current bike, and I fancy a different style (I think)

Go for it, big singles are where the fun is. Great fun on twisties (with Avon Distanzias on), not exactly bad on A roads, and obviously capable of off roading. Just make sure you avoid motorways.

I quite like the second one, the long travel makes it look a bit more serious... and being lanky will probably be fine for me

If you like transalps, look at dominators, africa twins, and Kawasaki KLRs.

Thing is I know they are probably what suits my needs perfectly, but my needs aren't all my wants....

I dunno why I hadn't though about the Dominator, looks interesting. Hmm.

Awesome engine. Its old, but with that comes reliability.

Ask me anything, I have spent 5 months modding my FMX650, now churning out 40bhp which I'm very happy with.

I have a XR600R yes its a pain in the arse to be quite frank
Once you have the knack of starting it you can do it everytime, but, like said they don't like going to fast for too long, don't like being in the high revs for too long and are very uncomfortable.
