The insurance in Leeds is pretty expensive, only a couple of the districts fall into the lowest insurance category. In term time I will be here, but bike-less most of the time as that stays at home where the insurance is cheap.

Lots of students in certain areas of Leeds, in fact a lot of the time I am pretty sure I only see students in a day. Don't often see families where I live.

Leeds has good access to country roads though.

It's not too far from Harogate/ York. evening runs to the lakes/North Yorks aren't a problem.

why not live out of Leeds and commute in.

I'm actually moving down to Leeds from Scotland to go to Uni in September. I won't know anyone either when I get there. So this is a thread I'm going to keep an eye on.

I think I already did join but it's not quite as active as the Scottish blabbermouths. Laughing

It's actually Bradford Uni I'm going to, but opting to stay in Leeds. Software Engineering is the course I'm doing. Still to sort out accomodation. Maybe worth asking about this in the Northern section.

Just don't tell your insurance company that you moving to Leeds, I did (to get a quote) and the price tripled, so I said I wasn't going to bring it but the person at the end of the phone said they'd add it to my record so they'd know if it got nicked from here, grr!

I've heard about the insurance differences in Leeds. I think this may be a problem as I'm going from working full time to be a full time student. The pennies will be tight already. Not sure what I'm going to do in regards to a bike yet. I might have a look at a few quotes before moving.

New Zealand is a very beautiful place, but also a very boring place. If you do decide to come to the UK, the further south the better! Wink

Problem is all the student areas (post code wise) are ranked by insurance companies as being the highest risk areas, so insurance is always loads.

For me I don't need my bike at university, I don't think I could afford to run it and being in a big city (coming from a large village) everything I need isn't a far walk away.

Then why is my work full of people from the south, who have moved it for a better quality of life.

People who before had a flat in Wembley, now have a 4 bedroom detached house.

My commute is 8 minutes, my major biking problem is sheep.

that's cause there are so many burglaries in those areas, particularly around the first of july when the mass exodus begins (when all the contracts expire and the undergrads have to move) cause so many leave windows and doors open

eg. my gf lives in a student-ish area, one of her flatmates nipped out the back door to the cornershop and left the back door unlocked (with people in the house) afor she got back they'd been home invaded and they'd stolen a laptop and an ipod.

Because they lost their jobs and need to live somewhere on benefits! I am sure there are some lovely beautiful places further up the country, but the few times I have ventured up in that direction I have been very happy to get back.

He said he wants to get a motorbike when he gets here. I assume he wants to ride it properly, not coast along yet another commuter town bypass.

If you want a good time jwalker, then Leeds will suit you just fine. Good access to top biking roads too! Thumbs Up

Plenty of good roads down south!

Also if you are keeping a bike in Leeds don't spent too much on it, it'll probably get nicked after a few weeks.. Wink

Leeds is a fantastic dity full of life and activities.

Also is a great area for good roads.
You have to the east the N Yorks moors and coast... Fantastic.
And to the West you have the lake District, or is so inclinded Blackpool etc...

As a Ex South coast lad, i can say it is a lot better up here, than the south coast. Thumbs Up

People are so much friendlier Karma

I don't know why everyone says insurance is expensive in Leeds, mine is cheaper here than it was in Guisborough (Nice North Yorkshire town).

Both my bikes are insured fully comp for under £300 in total.

I reckon you should get an off roader!
