dammit! clutch cable go boom!

my clutch cable has snapped on the way home Sad

Anyone know where I can get a new one at this time of night?

Currently sat in Hammersmith, on the slip road onto the eastbound A4. Bike is a cb500s.

You can change up and down without the clutch, it doesn't do the gearbox many favours though.

I have recovery on the way, but I'd rather not do bad things to my gearbox if I can help it Sad

Just concerned about getting to work in the morning! 25 miles of Central London with no clutch isn't my idea of fun!

Sadly, I missed it due to being a muppet, but the lovely bike recovery people turned up and got me and the beastie home again!

Tomorrow shall be spent running around picking up 2 clutch cables (hurrah for spares, so I don't get caught out again...), and explaining - rather sheepishly - why I will be late for work Very Happy

funny, mine snapped today too at about 4 o'clock.

i was a minute away from a local bike shop that i know well, so they came and took me and the bike in the van. leaving it there tonight, picking it up tomorrow to fit a new cable there.

A clutch cable really doesn't take up much space and along with a can of tyre weld I think that is the best two things to carry with you (if you have space)

They are both things that are really easily fixable so there is no point in waiting for the RAC/AA or other recovery to get you back. Those repairs can be done in a few minutes and you are on your way again... anything else is usually more mechanical so would need more work anyway!

I've had a clutch cable go on me twice and both times I was glad I carried a spare!

Same with tyre weld - nothing worse than being stranded with a flat tyre!

As I said earlier, if you don't have the space, fair enough - no point in trying to take that stuff with you, but if you do, what harm does it do to have that under your seat?

HG do a cable repair kit. Small tin (shoe polish tin size) containing 2 inner cables and a selection of solderless nipples for the end. Probably worth carrying one.

I carry a cable repair kit, goes in a pouch less than 1cm thick and sits under my seat along with a puncture repair kit and a first aid kit.

I've not had a clutch cable snap but had the actuating arm snap on a GSXR750 so the same effect, got home (with a pillion for half of it) without the clutch, getting going was very tricky, just paddled along in neutral, got a bit of speed then stuck it in first while holding starter and it'd go, clutchless upshifts are easy and smooth, downshifting is painful.... so best avoid it.

A friend's clutch cable snapped on a Speed triple and I was able to nip home pick up a spare (badly frayed) from my Fireblade and bodge it on to get his home.
